Priority Records
Priority Records is an American distribution company and record label known for artists including N.W.A, Ice-T, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Big L, Silkk the Shocker and Westside Connection. It also distributed hip hop record labels including Death Row Records, Hoo-Bangin' Records, No Limit Records, Posthuman Records, Rap-A-Lot Records, Rawkus Records, Roc-A-Fella Records, Ruthless Records and Wu-Tang Records. According to '' Billboard'', "few record labels were as important to the rise of West Coast hip hop as Priority Records." Raising Fear
''Raising Fear'' is the third studio album by the American heavy metal band Armored Saint. It was released in 1987 via Chrysalis Records. The band recorded the album as a four-piece as guitarist Phil Sandoval had left Armored Saint during the recording of its previous album, '' Delirious Nomad'', although he rejoined the band a few years later. After ''Raising Fear'' was released, Chrysalis dropped the band. This was the last Armored Saint studio album with guitarist Dave Prichard, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1989 and died of the disease the following year, as the band was preparing for their next album '' Symbol of Salvation''. ''Nice & Smooth'' is the debut studio album by American hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth from The Bronx, NY. It was released on May 16, 1989 via Fresh Records and Sleeping Bag Records. The album is notable for its sense of humor and comedy rhymes. The release singles of the album are "Early to Rise" and "Funky for You." This was the duo's only release on Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records before it signed with Def Jam Recordings sub-label RAL Records. It was included in The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. It was one of three titles acquired by Priority Records when Sleeping Bag went out of business in 1992. Nice & Smooth is an East Coast hip hop duo from New York City that consists of Gregory O. "Greg Nice" Mays (born May 30, 1967) and Darryl O. "Smooth B" Barnes (born August 3, 1967) plus their deejay Tedd "DJ Teddy Tedd" Whiting. The duo released four albums between 1989 and 1997. Their first collaborative appearance was on the single "Dope on a Rope"/"Skill Trade" on Strange Family Records in 1987. On the strength of that underground single they managed a guest spot on the song "Pimpin Ain't Easy" by Big Daddy Kane on his 1989 album ''It's a Big Daddy Thing''. ''We're in This Together'' is the 1990 studio album by American hip hop duo Low Profile. It was released in 1990 through Priority Records, and it was produced entirely by DJ Aladdin. The album peaked at number 66 on the US ''Billboard'' Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Production ''We're in This Together'' was recorded and mixed at Milagre Sound Recorders in Glendale, California. Release ''We're in This Together'' was released on January 25, 1990. Two singles from "We're in This Together" charated "Pay Ya Dues" which peaked at #8 on the Hot Rap Songs, and "Funky Song", which peaked at #87 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Low Profile (New Zealand Band)
Low Profile were a New Zealand alternative rock band of the 1980s, formed by Phil Bowering (formerly of The Protons) and Steve Garden (Last Man Down, National Anthem), recording on the Jayrem label. The band's lineup included – among others – the late Mike Farrell on guitar and vocals, Tom Ludvigson (the Jive Bombers, Snap, Bluespeak, Trip to the Moon) and Stuart Pearce (Coconut Rough). Grip It! On That Other Level
''Grip It! On That Other Level'' is the second studio album by the Houston, Texas based hip-hop group, the Ghetto Boys (later spelled Geto Boys), released on March 12, 1989, on Rap-A-Lot Records. Following the disappointing results of the group's first album, Rap-A-Lot CEO James Prince replaced two of the group members with Scarface (then known as Akshen) and Willie D, who joined original members Bushwick Bill and DJ Ready Red. Recording for the album began in 1988, and finished in early 1989. The majority of the album's tracks were produced by DJ Ready Red, and much of the album's lyrical content deals with violent and misogynistic topics, which would later be credited for pioneering the horrorcore hip hop subgenre. Upon its 1989 release, ''Grip It! On That Other Level'' reached number 166 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, and number 19 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. ''Unfinished Business'' is the second album by hip hop duo EPMD. Released August 1, 1989 the album built upon the success of the group's previous album '' Strictly Business'', which was released the previous year. The lead single, " So Wat Cha Sayin'," was the only charting single released from the album. It was the second album from the group to hit #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 16, 1989. It was one of three albums that Priority/EMI Records acquired from Sleeping Bag Records when it ceased operations in 1991. ''Making Trouble'' is the debut album by the American hip-hop group the Ghetto Boys. The group originally consisted of Bushwick Bill, DJ Ready Red, Sire Jukebox and Prince Johnny C. Following the release of ''Making Trouble'', Rap-A-Lot Records dropped Sire Jukebox and Johnny C from the group, and added Scarface and Willie D. ''Making Trouble'' received little attention, negative reviews, and is often forgotten in the midst of the group's later successful, acclaimed and controversial albums. Style and Influence The group used a style of rap similar to Run-DMC at this time as opposed to the more hardcore rap style that Scarface and Willie D provided in later albums. Geto Boys (originally spelled Ghetto Boys) was an American hip-hop group originally formed in Houston, Texas. The Geto Boys enjoyed success in the 1990s with the group's classic lineup consisting of Bushwick Bill, Scarface and Willie D, earning several certified albums and hit singles, including " Mind Playing Tricks on Me" which reached No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs and #23 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. ''Strictly Business'' is the debut album by hip-hop duo EPMD. It was released on June 7, 1988, by Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records around the world and BCM Records in Germany. It peaked at No. 80 on the ''Billboard'' 200 soon after release, yet it earned an RIAA gold album certification within four months of its release. In addition, it has received much positive critical attention since its release. In 2012, the album was ranked number 453 on ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
