Prime Minister Of Niue
The prime minister of Niue (officially the premier of Niue prior to 3 September 2024) is Niue's head of government. They are elected by the Niue Assembly, and form a Cabinet consisting of themselves and three other members of the Assembly. Sir Robert Rex was continuously re-elected every three years from Niue's associated statehood in 1974 until his death in 1992. Seal Of Niue
The Seal of Niue, or the Public Seal of Niue, is the official seal of Niue. It was adopted in September 2021. The first version of the seal was created in 1974 when Niue gained self-governing status and joined into Associated state, free association with New Zealand. History Before 1974 Niue used the Coat of Arms of New Zealand. The Niue Constitution Act, passed in 1974, provided for the first unique seal to be created for Niue. The Seal was to be held by the List of Speakers of the Niue Assembly, Speaker of the Niue Assembly and was to be used to authenticate public documents or to affirm the creation of new laws by the Cabinet of Niue. The Speaker is also responsible for ensuring that the Seal is not misused. All judicial notices in Niue are affixed with the Seal. Sani Lakatani
Sani Elia Lagigietama Lakatani (born 4 June 1936) is a former Premier of Niue. He was a member of the Niue People's Party. Early life Lakatani served in the New Zealand Army as a corporal. He was deployed to Vietnam as part of the Whiskey2 deployment. Political career Early career He was first elected to the Niue Assembly in the 1990 election as a candidate for Young Vivian's Niue People's Action Party (NPAP). On election night the NPAP believed it had a majority, but a leadership dispute between Vivian and Lakatani saw a group of MP's led by the latter switch sides to support Premier Robert Rex, who was elected on a 12–8 vote. Lakatani was appointed to Rex's Cabinet as Minister of Finance, but was sacked just five months later after circulating a petition calling for a change of leadership. Frank Lui
Frank Fakaotimanava Lui (19 November 1935 – 9 July 2021) was a Niuean politician, who served as the premier of the Pacific Island state of Niue from 1993 to 1999. Early life Lui was raised by his grandparents on Niue after his parents and older siblings migrated to Wellington, New Zealand. His parents sent for him when he was nine years old and he attended Newtown School. Soon afterwards, he transferred to Naenae School in Lower Hutt when his parents took the tenancy of a State house there. Lui left Naenae school in 1950 to attend Wellington High School (then Wellington Technical College). On leaving school, he joined the New Zealand merchant navy, and was immediately caught up in the prolonged and acrimonious waterfront dispute of 1951. He returned to Niue in 1956 to care for his grandparents and has lived there since. Mititaiagimene Young Vivian (born 12 November 1935) is a Niuean politician and diplomat, who served as Premier of Niue twice, the first time from December 1992 to March 1993 following the death of Sir Robert Rex, and the second from 2002 to 2008. He also served as a Cabinet Minister multiple times, first as Minister of Education, Economic Development and Agriculture and later as Minister of Finance under Robert Rex, and in the Cabinet of Sani Lakatani. From 1979 to 1982 he served as Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission. Early life Vivian attended primary school on Niue, before going to New Zealand for his secondary education. He was educated at St George's Preparatory School in Wanganui from 1949, and then Wanganui Collegiate School as a boarder between 1951 and 1954. General elections were held in Niue on 7 April 1990, seven months after Cyclone Ofa caused considerable damage to the island. While primarily contested by independents, the election was contested by Young Vivian's Niue People's Action Party (NPAP), which was opposed to premier Robert Rex. On election night the NPAP believed it had a majority, but a leadership dispute between Vivian and newly-elected MP Sani Lakatani saw a group of MP's led by the latter switch sides. Following the election, Robert Rex was re-elected for a sixth term as Premier of Niue by a vote of 12 to 8. Sam Tagelagi was re-elected Speaker by the same margin.
