Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor
The Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor (PMCSA) is a position in New Zealand, created in 2009. The Chief Science Advisor is responsible for providing independent scientific advice to the government, and may comment on scientific issues publicly. The first PMCSA was Sir Peter Gluckman, who held the position for nine years. He was followed by Dame Juliet Gerrard, whose term finished in 2024. The role was vacant from 2024, until in May 2025 it was announced John Roche would be taking up the role. Role The Office of the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor is positioned within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Peter Gluckman
Sir Peter David Gluckman (born 8 February 1949) is a New Zealand scientist. Originally trained as a paediatrician, he served as the inaugural Chief Science Advisor to the New Zealand Prime Minister from 2009 to 2018. He is a founding member and was inaugural chair of the International Network for Government Science Advice, and is president of the International Science Council. Scientific career Born in Auckland, Gluckman attended Auckland Grammar School before studying paediatrics and endocrinology at the University of Otago, gaining an MBChB in 1971 and an MMedSc in 1976 from the University of Auckland. After further training at the University of California, San Francisco, he returned to New Zealand in 1980 to establish a group in perinatal physiology as a career fellow of the Medical Research Council of New Zealand. Juliet Gerrard
Dame Juliet Ann Gerrard (born 1967) is a New Zealand biochemistry academic. She is a professor at the University of Auckland and was New Zealand Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor during the administration of Jacinda Ardern. Early life Gerrard was born in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, in 1967. Her family frequently moved around the United Kingdom when she was a child, living in various locations including Nottingham, Wales and Grimsby. She liked science and focused on chemistry in her studies. Education and career Gerrard obtained a first-class honours degree in chemistry at the University of Oxford and then in 1992 a DPhil titled ''Studies on dihydrodipicolinate synthase'', also from Oxford. GNS Science
GNS Science (), officially registered as the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited, is a New Zealand Crown Research Institute. It focuses on geology, geophysics (including seismology and volcanology), and nuclear science (particularly ion-beam technologies, isotope science and carbon dating). From 1 July 2025 GNS Science will become part of the new Public Research Organisation New Zealand Institute for Earth Science. A gill () is a respiratory organ that many aquatic organisms use to extract dissolved oxygen from water and to excrete carbon dioxide. The gills of some species, such as hermit crabs, have adapted to allow respiration on land provided they are kept moist.
