The Port of Santo Domingo () is located at the mouth of the marine entrance to the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The port is suited for both turnaround and transit visits. It is located from the port of Rio Haina. Overview The Port of Santo Domingo is being totally renovated as part of a major redevelopment project aimed at integrating the port area and Santo Domingo's Colonial City to create an attractive destination for cruise, yacht and high-end tourism. The project, supported by legislation approved in 2005, is being developed by a private consortium and includes the construction of new infrastructure: the rehabilitation of the two current terminals, major dredging works in the approach channel and turning basin, a new sports marina and a real estate development. Rio Haina
The Haina Occidental Port (often referred to as "Rio Haina") is located in the Haina River, Dominican Republic near Santo Domingo. President Trujillo inaugurated Haina Occidental Port in 1953. Overview Haina Port has two terminals, which are located on either side of the Haina River. The older terminal is called Haina Occidental Terminal (which is the current name of the Port), and the newer terminal is named Haina Oriental Terminal. Turning Basin
A turning basin, winding basin or swinging basin is a wider body of water, either located at the end of a ship canal or in a port to allow cargo ships to turn and reverse their direction of travel, or to enable long narrow barges in a canal to turn a sharp corner. For a complete 180-degree turnaround, the width of the basin must be more than the length of the longest vessel normally traversing the waterway. Onboard bow thrusters or tugboats may assist in manoeuvering the ship. In seaports the turning basin is often not a real physical basin, but a designated area in the harbour basin where turning is possible and mooring is prohibited.
