Port Augusta Airport is an airport located west of Port Augusta, South Australia. Overview The airport serves as a gateway to the city of Port Augusta, as well as isolated mineral projects in the north of the state. Other operations include a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service which maintains administrative, engineering and hangar facilities for the Pilatus PC-12 fleet at the airport. The majority of traffic at the airport are general aviation related movements, and the Port Augusta Aero Club is also located here. The airfield has previously supported charter operations using larger jets such as the Fokker 100 and British Aerospace 146 under a concession by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, however these operations are no longer permitted due to apron constraints and jet blast clearances. The prison has facilities for high, medium and low security prisoners including protectees and special needs prisoners. Port Augusta Railway Station
Port Augusta railway station is a railway station located on the Adelaide-Port Augusta railway line in Port Augusta, South Australia. History In 1878, the first railway line in to Port Augusta was when it became the southern terminus of a proposed line to Darwin. Under South Australian ownership the narrow gauge railway, known as the Great Northern Railway, was extended in stages and reached Oodnadatta in 1891. In 1882, this line also connected Port Augusta to Adelaide when the Peterborough–Quorn railway line was completed, as there was already railway from Peterborough to Adelaide. The original Port Augusta railway station was on Commercial Road, and is now heritage listed and used as an art gallery. The railway continued through what later became railyards, through the original station, and down Commercial Road to the wharf area. Port Augusta Town Hall
The Port Augusta Town Hall is a heritage-listed former town hall at 54 Commercial Road, Port Augusta, South Australia, Port Augusta. It was Port Augusta's seat of local government from 1887 to 1983. History The town hall was built in 1886-87, to a design by Alfred Barham Black and H. E. Hughes. An earlier design by James Hill was condemned by architects. The design featured a large central auditorium, 75 feet by 45 feet with a stage. It was built by R. Honey, from stone quarried at Quorn, South Australia, Quorn. The foundation stone was laid in June 1886 by the wife of the mayor, J. C. Knipe. It was opened in May 1887 by Knipe's successor as mayor, David Drysdale. The building was severely damaged by fire in 1944, with the main hall, gallery, mayor's parlour, supper room, stage, dressing and cloak rooms, and mothers' and babies' association all destroyed. The City of Port Augusta is a local government area located at the northern end of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is centred on the town of Port Augusta. History The Port Augusta region is a natural crossroads and aborigines have been trading in the area for 40 000 years. European settlement began in the 1840s. The town grew from a pastoral service centre to a railway town with the construction of the overland telegraph line. Port Augusta's rail importance grew with the start of the railways towards Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie. The municipality was created as the Corporate Town of Port Augusta on 3 November 1875. A number of smaller separate municipalities were proclaimed in the Port Augusta area, including the Corporate Town of Davenport (August 1887), the Corporate Town of Port Augusta West (October 1887), and the District Council of Davenport (January 1888, later called Woolundunga).
