This is a list of the 122 cartoons of the ''Popeye the Sailor'' film series produced by Famous Studios (later known as Paramount Cartoon Studios) for Paramount Pictures from 1942 to 1957, with 14 in black-and-white and 108 in color. Popeye The Sailor (film Series)
''Popeye the Sailor'' is an American animated series of short films based on the ''Popeye'' comic strip character created by E. C. Segar. In 1933, Max and Dave Fleischer's Fleischer Studios, based in New York City, adapted Segar's characters into a series of theatrical cartoon shorts for Paramount Pictures. The plotlines in the animated cartoons tended to be simpler than those presented in the comic strips, and the characters slightly different. A villain, usually Bluto, makes a move on Popeye's "sweetie", Olive Oyl. The villain clobbers Popeye until he eats spinach, giving him superhuman strength. Thus empowered, Popeye makes short work of the villain. The Fleischer ''Popeye'' cartoons proved to be among the most popular of the 1930s, and would remain a staple of Paramount's release schedule for nearly 25 years. Spinach Fer Britain
''Spinach Fer Britain'' is a 1943 anti-Nazi propaganda cartoon, produced by Famous Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film centers around Popeye the Sailor trying to deliver a shipment of spinach to 10 Downing Street in London, while fighting off Nazi Kriegsmarine soldiers pursuing him in a U-boat. The short was released on January 22, 1943. Like its predecessor, '' You're a Sap, Mr. Jap'', ''Spinach Fer Britain'' was kept out of distribution for several decades, due to its propagandistic nature and frequent display of Nazism, until it received an official release in November 2008 in a DVD collection of Popeye cartoons produced between 1941–1943. RCA Photophone was the trade name given to one of four major competing technologies that emerged in the American film industry in the late 1920s for synchronizing electrically recorded audio to a motion picture image. RCA Photophone was an optical sound, "variable-area" film exposure system, in which the modulated area (width) corresponded to the waveform of the audio signal. The four other major technologies were the Warner Bros.
