Polish Jazz
Polish jazz has a history that spans periods of both acceptance and political repression. Before communism (1930–39) The beginning of jazz in Poland is difficult to determine. As early as the 1930s, clubs in Warsaw, Kraków, Rzeszów or Poznań would play some jazz. This tended to be swing and some of it was influenced by the traditional classical music. American popular music (particularly songs by George Gershwin) was in great demand. Eddie Rosner is considered to be the first Polish jazz musician of significance. Stalinist repression (1945–58) After the Communist takeover, jazz was initially repressed. Although groups like Melomani existed, jazz was officially condemned and forbidden from the radio. Krzysztof Komeda
Krzysztof Trzciński (27 April 1931 – 23 April 1969), known professionally as Krzysztof Komeda, was a Polish film score composer and jazz pianist widely regarded as one of the most influential Polish jazz musicians. He is best known for writing the scores for Roman Polanski’s films '' Knife in the Water'' (1962), '' Cul-de-sac'' (1966), '' The Fearless Vampire Killers'' (1967), and '' Rosemary’s Baby'' (1968). Komeda's album '' Astigmatic'' (1965) is often considered one of the most important European jazz albums. British critic Stuart Nicholson describes the album as "marking a shift away from the dominant American approach with the emergence of a specific European aesthetic." Marcin Jahr
Marcin Jahr (born March 25, 1969) is a Polish jazz drummer. Biography Jahr was born on March 25, 1969, in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He studied drums at The Music Academy in Katowice. He finished his studies in 1992 earning a diploma of jazz music (Department of Jazz and Popular Music). Before that, he had taken part in jazz competitions during Jazz Juniors Festival in Kraków, winning prizes and distinguishing rewards. Since the beginning of his musical career (in 1985) he has taken part in festivals in Poland such as Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw, Jazz on the Odra in Wrocław, Poznań Jazz Fair. He also played on the festivals abroad - Pori Jazz Festival’ 88 with Wiesław Pieregorólka Big Band and Istanbul Festiwal’ 93 with Polish - Turkish Ensemble. Maciej Fortuna
Maciej Fortuna is a Polish jazz trumpet player, composer and musical educator. He runs the Fortuna Music record label. Jerzy Milian dedicated his composition "Music For Mr. Fortuna" to Maciej Fortuna. Education Maciej graduated from the University of Poznan Law School in 2007 and obtained a master's degree with first class honours from the Academy of Music in Wroclaw, Piotr Wojtasik jazz trumpet class (2010). Urszula Bogumiła Dudziak-Urbaniak (born 22 October 1943) is a Polish jazz vocalist. She has worked with Krzysztof Komeda, Michał Urbaniak (her ex-husband), Gil Evans, Archie Shepp, and Lester Bowie. In 2007, her 1970s song "Papaya" gained widespread popularity in Asia and Latin America. Career Dudziak was born in the Straconka, Bielsko-Biała, Straconka, now a neighbourhood of Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Krzesimir Dębski
Krzesimir Marcin Dębski (; born 26 October 1953 in Wałbrzych) is a Polish composer, conductor and jazz violinist. His music career as a musician has been that of a performer as well as composer of classical music, opera, television and feature films. In 2024, he became the recipient of the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Merit to Culture. Professional career Dębski was born in 1953 in Wałbrzych and began attending a music school in Kielce at the age of six. Marek Bliziński
Marek Bliziński (22 March 1947 – 17 March 1989) was a Polish jazz guitarist and composer. He played with Michał Urbaniak, Wojciech Karolak and Zbigniew Namysłowski. Bliziński was the first Polish world-class jazz guitarist. Stylistically, he belonged to the jazz mainstream, continuing the tradition of electric jazz guitar started by Charlie Christian and represented later by musicians such as Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield.
