The Polish Film Academy (Polish: ''Polska Akademia Filmowa'') is a professional honorary organization dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of motion pictures. History The academy was founded in 2003 on the initiative of the Independent Film Foundation (Polish language, Polish: ''Niezależna Fundacja Filmowa'', NFF) and is a national film academy equivalent to other national academies awarding such prizes as French César Awards, Czech Lion Awards or Spanish Goya Awards. It is composed of about 600 motion picture professionals from Poland. Membership in the Academy is by invitation only. Maciej Stuhr
Maciej Jerzy Stuhr (born 23 June 1975) is a Polish actor, comedian and occasional film director. In 2022, he was the recipient of the Polish Academy Award for Best Actor. Life and career In 1999, he majored in psychology from the Jagiellonian University before moving on to study acting at Kraków's National Academy of Theatre Arts, which he finished in 2003. He became known for his impressions of Polish actors and performers, such as Gustaw Holoubek and he established the cabaret ''Po Żarcie'', where he wrote most of the material. ''Quo Vadis: A Narrative of the Time of Nero'' () is a historical novel written by Henryk Sienkiewicz in Polish. The novel ''Quo Vadis'' tells of a love that develops between a young Christian woman, Lygia (Ligia in Polish), and Marcus Vinicius, a Roman patrician. It takes place in the city of Rome under the rule of emperor Nero, from to AD 68 when Nero committed suicide. Sienkiewicz studied the Roman Empire extensively before writing the novel, with the aim of getting historical details correct. Consequently, several historical figures appear in the book. As a whole, the novel carries a pro-Christian message. It was first published in instalments in the ''Gazeta Polska'' between 26 March 1895 and 29 February 1896, as well as in two other journals, ''Czas'' and ''Dziennik Poznański'', starting two and three days later. ''Quo Vadis'' is a 2001 Polish film directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz based on the 1896 book of the same title by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It was Poland's submission to the 74th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not nominated. Plot The central plot in the movie revolves around the love of a Roman patrician, Marcus Vinicius, towards a Christian girl (coming from the territory of modern-day Poland) set against the backdrop of the persecutions against Christians during the reign of Nero. In the beginning, Lygia, a Christian and hostage of Rome, becomes the object of Vinicius' love but she refuses his advances. Vinicius' friend Petronius tries to manipulate Nero, who has authority over all Roman hostages, to give Lygia to Vinicius, but Lygia is taken into hiding by Christians. Jerzy Józef Trela (14 March 1942 – 15 May 2022) was a Polish actor. In 2003 he starred in the film '' An Ancient Tale: When the Sun Was a God'' under Jerzy Hoffman. Jan Frycz (; born 15 May 1954) is a film, television and stage actor. He was nominated for seven Polish Film Awards, winning three times for Best Supporting Actor in the films '' Pornografia'' (2003), '' The Welts'' (2004) and '' 25 Years of Innocence'' (2021). Biography Frycz's father was a mining engineer and disliked his interest in acting; he argued that a boy should have a more stable job. A graduate of the National Higher School of Theatre in Warsaw (1954), he first made his debut in the theatre in Jelenia Góra.
