Frederik George Pohl Jr. (; November 26, 1919 – September 2, 2013) was an American list of science fiction authors, science-fiction writer, editor, and science fiction fandom, fan, with a career spanning nearly 75 years—from his first published work, the 1937 poem "Elegy to a Dead Satellite: Luna", to the 2011 novel ''All the Lives He Led''. Johann Ehrenfried Pohl (12 September 1746, Leipzig – 25 October 1800, Dresden) was a German physician and botanist. He was the son of physician Johann Christoph Pohl (1706–1780). From 1763 to 1769, he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig, receiving his doctorate in 1772. Afterwards, he embarked on an extended study trip to Strasbourg, Paris, Rouen and the Netherlands. Caroline Hodgson (c. 1851 – 11 July 1908), also known as Madame Brussels, was a well-known brothel proprietor and local identity of the Little Lon district in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, during the late 19th century. Life Hodgson was born in Potsdam, Prussia; a daughter of John and Frederica Lohman or Lohmar. She married the well connected Studholme George Hodgson in London on 18 February 1871 and the couple immediately migrated to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on the ship ''Melmerby'' on 24 June 1871. In November 1872, Studholme joined the Victoria Police and was placed in country Mansfield, leaving his 25-year-old wife alone in Melbourne. By the end of 1874, Caroline, using the name 'Madame Brussels', was running a number of brothels, an occupation she continued successfully until 1907. Robert Otto Pohl (December 17, 1929 – August 30, 2024) was a German-American physicist, specialized in condensed matter physics topics such as amorphous solids, glass, thermal conductivity, and thin films, who was the Goldwin Smith Emeritus Professor of Physics at Cornell University. He developed the 3ω-method, widely used to measure thermal conductivities. He is also known for showing that thermal properties of glass are different from crystalline solids at low temperatures. William Francis Pohl (16 September 1937 – 9 December 1988) was an American mathematician, specializing in differential geometry and known for the Clifton–Pohl torus. Pohl received from the University of Chicago his B.A in 1957 and his M.A.1958. He completed his Ph.D. at Berkeley in 1961 under the direction of Shiing-Shen Chern with dissertation ''Differential Geometry of Higher Order''. His dissertation was published in 1962 in the journal ''Topology'' and has received over 120 citations in the mathematical literature. Witta Pohl ( Breipohl; 1 November 1937 – 4 April 2011) was a German actress. Life Born in the East Prussian city of Königsberg, she was one of six children to Wilhelm Breipohl, a gynaecologist, and his wife Marie-Luise, née Klönne. During World War II, her family moved to Bielefeld, where Pohl grew up. After working as a beautician, she attended drama school in Berlin to become a stage actress. Louis Pohl (September 14, 1915 – December 22, 1999) was an American painter, illustrator, art teacher, printmaker and cartoonist. Early life and education He was born on September 14, 1915, in Cincinnati, Ohio. A childhood illness made it impossible to walk without pain and prevented Pohl from entering school until he was 8 years old. To keep him occupied, his parents would give him papers and pencils with which to draw. When 14 years old, Pohl spent his summer caddying at a local golf course.
