Missouri
Missouri (''see #Etymology and pronunciation, pronunciation'') is a U.S. state, state in the Midwestern United States, Midwestern region of the United States. Ranking List of U.S. states and territories by area, 21st in land area, it borders Iowa to the north, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee to the east, Arkansas to the south and Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska to the west. In the south are the Ozarks, a forested highland, providing timber, minerals, and recreation. At 1.5 billion years old, the St. Francois Mountains are among the oldest in the world. Walter Bargen
Walter Bargen (born c. 1945) is an American poet, the first Poet Laureate of Missouri, a position which he held from February 13, 2008 to January 2010. Biography Born to an American father and a German mother, Bargen's childhood was spent traveling back and forth between Germany and the United States. In the early 1950s, he lived and played in the ruins of Mannheim-Heidelberg. In the 1960s, he settled in Missouri, working as a construction foreman, writing poetry on the side as a way of exploring the confusion caused by World War II. He wrote his first poem in high school, and has since been published in approximately one hundred magazines. His first book was published in 1980, ''Fields of Thenar''. In the 1990s, he wrote several works about Missouri, such as one volume which focused on the Missouri River. Jeremiah Wilson "Jay" Nixon (born February 13, 1956) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the List of governors of Missouri, 55th governor of Missouri from 2009 to 2017. David Clewell
David Clewell (February 11, 1955 – February 15, 2020) was an American poet and creative writing instructor at Webster University. From 2010–2012, he served as the Poet Laureate of Missouri. Life Clewell was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1955 and attended Highland Park High School, in nearby Highland Park, where he first developed an interest in poetry. He graduated from University of Wisconsin with a B.A. in English. In 1979, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri and earned an M.F.A. in writing from Washington University in St. Louis. In 1985, Clewell began teaching in the English Department at Webster University. A year later, he started the Webster University Visiting Writers Series, which he still coordinated until his death. As an instructor at Webster University, Clewell taught courses on 19th- and 20th-century literature, as well as poetry workshops and seminars. William Trowbridge (poet)
William Trowbridge is an American academic and poet who was a Poet Laureate in the American state of Missouri. Trowbridge holds a B.A. in philosophy and an M.A. in English from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. in English from Vanderbilt University. He served as Poet Laureate of the State of Missouri from 2012 to 2016. Trowbridge is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at Northwest Missouri State University, where he was an editor of ''The Laurel Review''/GreenTower Press from 1986 to 2004. He has given readings and workshops at schools, colleges, bookstores, and literary conferences throughout the United States. He teaches in the University of Nebraska low-residency MFA in writing program. Michael Lynn Parson (born September 17, 1955) is an American politician and former law enforcement officer who served as the 57th List of governors of Missouri, governor of Missouri, from 2018 to 2025. A member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party, Parson assumed the governorship upon the resignation of Eric Greitens, under whom he served as List of lieutenant governors of Missouri, lieutenant governor from 2017 to 2018.
