Hawaiian Pidgin English
Hawaiian Pidgin (alternately, Hawaiʻi Creole English or HCE, known locally as Pidgin) is an English-based creole language spoken in Hawaiʻi. An estimated 600,000 residents of Hawaii speak Hawaiian Pidgin natively and 400,000 speak it as a second language. Although English and Hawaiian are the two official languages of the state of Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian Pidgin is spoken by many Hawaiian residents in everyday conversation and is often used in advertising targeted toward locals in Hawaiʻi. In the Hawaiian language, it is called ōlelo pai ai – "pounding-taro language". Hawaiian Pidgin was first recognized as a language by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2015. However, Hawaiian Pidgin is still thought of as lower status than the Hawaiian and English languages. Despite its name, Hawaiian Pidgin is not a pidgin, but rather a full-fledged, nativized and demographically stable creole language. It did, however, evolve from various real pidgins spoken as common languages between ethnic grou ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Pocho (crocodile)
Pocho (around 1950–1960 – 12 October 2011) was a Costa Rican crocodile who gained international attention for his relationship of over 20 years with Gilberto "Chito" Shedden, a local fisherman who found Pocho dying on the banks of the Reventazón River and nursed him back to health. The crocodile refused to return to the wild and chose to stay with Chito. The pair became famous after they began performing together. The 2013 documentary ''Touching the Dragon'' details their relationship. Discovery of Pocho Chito, a fisherman, tour guide, and naturalist from Siquirres, Limón Province, Costa Rica, discovered an emaciated and dehydrated male crocodile weighing on the banks of the Reventazón River in 1989. Upon closer examination, Shedden discovered that the crocodile had been shot in the head through the left eye by a local cattle farmer because the crocodile had been preying on a herd of cows. Shedden took the crocodile home in his boat along with the reluctant help of some ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Pocho Volcanic Field
Pocho volcanic field is a volcanic field in Argentina. It is associated with a crustal lineament known as the Ojo de Agua Lineament. It is located in the Sierras de Cordoba mountain chain. It formed during the late Miocene, when a progressive shallowing of the subducting Nazca Plate The Nazca Plate or Nasca Plate, named after the Nazca region of southern Peru, is an oceanic tectonic plate in the eastern Pacific Ocean basin off the west coast of South America. The ongoing subduction, along the Peru–Chile Trench, of the Na ... caused volcanic activity to retreat from the main Andes into the land behind the mountain chain. This did result in a typical shallow slab chemistry of the Pocho rocks. Volcanic activity at Pocho is dated about 4.7 +- 0.3 million years ago and took place over two cycles. Seismic activity in the area may indicate the presence of a residual magma chamber however, which would also explain anomalous crustal seismic velocities in the area. References ... Pocho (novel)
''Pocho'' (feminine: ''pocha'') is a pejorative slang term in Mexican Spanish that refers to Americans of Mexican descent. Definition The term originally referred to fruit that was spoiled or rotten, as well as to plants and individuals that appeared to be in poor health. He further observed that they were "doubly-marginalized": denied equal treatment by their birth country and regarded as inferior by their ancestral nation. The ''pocho'' lives on the cultural and racial line ... utterly unprotected, nddespised on every side: too Mexican for the Anglos and too ''agringado'' (assimilated into America) for the Mexicans. In addition to Americans of Mexican descent, ''pocho'' is also used colloquially in Mexico in reference to Mexicans who have emigrated and are perceived to have exc ...
