Play Equity
Play equity is the concept of ensuring all children have equitable access to play opportunities, sports programs and healthy movement. Youth sports, as well as structured and unstructured play, can contribute to the physical, emotional, social and academic development of young people. Play equity relates to the ongoing effort of providing opportunities and pathways to these benefits by removing barriers to access that can include economics, gender, ability, or where children reside. This concept is predicated on the relationship between positive youth development and physical activity, commonly referred to in the United States as sports-based youth development. Play equity broadly encompasses the issue of a lack of access to resources – including facilities, trained coaches, organized programs and equipment – in underrepresented or lower-income communities. Positive Youth Development
Positive youth development (PYD) programs are designed to optimize youth developmental progress. This is sought through a positivistic approach that emphasizes the inherent potential, strengths, and capabilities youth hold. PYD differs from other approaches within youth development work in that it rejects an emphasis on trying to correct what is considered wrong with children's behavior or development, renouncing a problem-oriented lens. Instead, it seeks to cultivate various personal assets and external contexts known to be important to human development. Youth development professionals live by the motto originally coined by Karen Pittman, "problem free is not fully prepared", as they work to grow youth into productive members of society. Seen through a PYD lens, young people are not regarded as "problems to be solved"; rather, they are seen as assets, allies, and agents of change who have much to contribute in solving the problems that affect them most. George Floyd
George Perry Floyd Jr. (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was an African-American man who was murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an arrest made after a store clerk suspected Floyd had used a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill, on May 25, 2020. Derek Chauvin, one of four police officers who arrived on the scene, knelt on Floyd's neck and back for over nine minutes, fatally asphyxiating him. After his murder, a series of protests against police brutality, especially towards black people, quickly spread globally and across the United States. His dying words, " I can't breathe", became a rallying slogan. Watts, Los Angeles
Watts is a neighborhood in southern Los Angeles, California. It is located within the South Los Angeles region, bordering the cities of Lynwood, Huntington Park and South Gate to the east and southeast, respectively, and the unincorporated community of Willowbrook to the south.
