Plangente
"Plangente" (Portuguese for 'sorrowful') is a Brazilian tango for piano by Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth. Background Nazareth, who spent all his life in Rio de Janeiro, wrote this piece when he was already a well-known composer and pianist. After he stopped working for Rio's Odeon Cinema, he began performing for a new publisher, Casa Carlos Gomes, as a "pianist demonstrator", a job he held from the early 20s to the early 30s, when he sunk into a recurrent depression that made him spend his last years in an asylum. The date of composition of "Plangente" is uncertain. However, best evidence points to the fact that it was written right before publication in 1925 by Casa Carlos Gomes, as Nazareth was a prolific composer and published very frequently. Nazareth, who was particularly fond of the piece, used it as part of his repertoire in his tour in São Paulo in 1926. Ernesto Nazareth
Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth (March 20, 1863 – February 1, 1934) was a Brazilian composer and pianist, especially noted for his creative maxixe and choro compositions. Influenced by a diverse set of dance rhythms including the polka, the habanera and the lundu, he combined these elements with his classical training to create compositions that he called “Brazilian tangos". These would be the precursors for what is known today as Choro. His piano repertoire is now part of the teaching programs of both classical and popular styles, as Nazareth once served at the boundary between these two worlds. Joshua Rifkin
Joshua Rifkin (born April 22, 1944) is an American conductor, pianist, and musicologist. He is currently a professor of music at Boston University. As a performer, he has recorded music by composers from Antoine Busnois to Silvestre Revueltas; as a scholar he has published research on composers from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Rifkin is known among classical musicians for his theory which says that most of Bach's choral works were sung with only one singer per choral line. Rifkin argued that "so long as we define 'chorus' in the conventional modern sense, then Bach's chorus with few exceptions simply did not exist."
