''Pipe Layin' Dan'' is the fourth solo release (and fifth album overall) by American comedian and actress LaWanda Page, billed as simply LaWanda, released on Laff Records in 1973. The album and other previous recordings were released before Page found mainstream success as Redd Foxx's nemesis Aunt Esther on the situation comedy television show ''Sanford and Son''. After Page's rise to fame, Laff Records released her recordings, with at least one album, ''Watch It, Sucka!'', reaching gold status. LaWanda Page (born Alberta Richmond; October 19, 1920September 14, 2002) was an Americans, American actress, comedian and dancer whose career spanned six decades. Crowned "The Queen of Comedy" or "The Black Queen of Comedy", Page melded Ribaldry, blue humor, signifyin' and observational comedy with jokes about Human sexuality, sexuality, race relations, African-American culture and religion. She released five solo albums, including the 1977 gold-selling ''Watch It, Sucker!'', and collaborated on two albums with the comedy group Skillet, Leroy & Co. Laff Records was a small American independent record label specializing in mainly African-American comedy and party records founded in 1967 in Los Angeles. Kliph Nesteroff, author of the book ''The Comedians'', wrote that "no other company cranked out as many comedy LPs during the 1970s. While much of its content was undeniably amateurish, it documented a subculture most comedy fans were unaware existed." It is most well known for releasing a series of Richard Pryor albums, mostly without Pryor's participation or approval, which earned the label several Grammy nominations and one win. John Elroy Sanford (December 9, 1922 – October 11, 1991), better known by his stage name Redd Foxx, was an American stand-up comedian and actor. Foxx gained success with his raunchy nightclub act before and during the civil rights movement. Known as the "King of the Party Records", he performed on more than 50 records in his lifetime. Signifyin' (sometimes written "signifyin(g)") is a practice in African-American culture involving a verbal strategy of indirection that exploits the gap between the denotative and figurative meanings of words. A simple example would be insulting someone to show them affection. Buccaneers were a kind of privateer or free sailors, and pirates particular to the Caribbean Sea during the 17th and 18th centuries.
