Pieter Van Os (journalist)
Pieter van Os (born February 8, 1971) is a Dutch writer and journalist. His published works include non-fiction books on a wide variety of subjects, including religion, war, political journalism, art and football. In 2020, he won the Brusse Prize for best journalistic book in the Dutch language with ''Liever dier dan mens'', a book translated into English as: ''Hiding in Plain Sight: How a Jewish girl survived Europe’s heart of darkness''. For the same book, Van Os won the prestigious Dutch Libris History Prize. ''Liever dier dan mens'' is the only book ever to have been awarded both prizes. Life and education Pieter van Os grew up in Groningen and studied the history of political thought in Minneapolis, Leiden and Barcelona. In the nineties he was contributing editor of the weekly ''De Groene Amsterdammer'', serving as its US-correspondent for this weekly, based in Washington DC. Libris History Prize
The Libris History Prize (formerly known as Great History Prize and Historisch Nieuwsblad/Volkskrant Prize) rewards history books originally written in Dutch, that appeal to a general audience. Originality, readability and historical soundness are the most important criteria. Established in 2007, it is awarded annually since 2009 by Libris, an association of independent Dutch booksellers, and amounts to €20,000 for the winner. All applications go through a selection process out of which a longlist of ten books are selected and announced. Subsequently, another selection round takes place which nominates a shortlist of the five best books. The author of each shortlisted book receives €1,500. Typically, the (independent) jury's selection is discussed and criticized in the Dutch press. The prize is an initiative of Historisch Nieuwsblad, Libris, the Netherlands Open Air Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the NPS/VPRO and ''de Volkskrant''. ''De Groene Amsterdammer'' () is an independent Dutch weekly news magazine published in Amsterdam. It is one of the five independent opinion magazines in the Netherlands, alongside '' HP/De Tijd'', '' Vrij Nederland'', ''Elsevier'' and the Jewish weekly '' NIW.'' History and profile ''De Groene Amsterdammer'' was founded in 1877, Martin van Amerongen was the editor-in-chief from 1984 to 1997 and then again from 1999 to 2002. ''De Groene Amsterdammer'' making it one of the oldest Dutch news magazines still in existence. The magazine started under the name ''De Amsterdammer'', meaning "someone (or something) from Amsterdam". ''NRC'', previously called ' (), is a daily morning newspaper published in the Netherlands by Mediahuis NRC. It is widely regarded as a newspaper of record in the country. History was first published on 1 October 1970 after a merger of the Amsterdam newspaper ' (founded 1828 by J.W. van den Biesen) and the Rotterdam ' (founded 1844 by Henricus Nijgh). The paper's motto is ' – Light (referring to the Age of Enlightenment) and Freedom. Editor was succeeded on 12 December 2006, by .
