Physics And Star Wars
The interstellar space opera epic ''Star Wars'' uses science and technology in its settings and storylines. The series has showcased many technological concepts, both in the movies and in the expanded universe of novels, comics and other forms of media. The ''Star Wars'' movies' primary objective is to build upon drama, philosophy, political science and less on scientific knowledge. Many of the on-screen technologies created or borrowed for the ''Star Wars'' universe were used mainly as plot devices. The iconic status that ''Star Wars'' has gained in popular culture and science fiction allows it to be used as an accessible introduction to real scientific concepts. Many of the features or technologies used in the ''Star Wars'' universe are not yet considered possible. Despite this, their concepts are still probable. Tatooine's twin stars In the past, scientists thought that planets would be unlikely to form around binary stars. However, recent simulations indicate that planets a ...

Interstellar Travel
Interstellar travel is the hypothetical travel of spacecraft between star systems. Due to the vast distances between the Solar System and nearby stars, interstellar travel is not practicable with current propulsion technologies. To travel between stars within a reasonable amount of time (decades or centuries), an interstellar spacecraft must reach a significant fraction of the speed of light, requiring enormous energy. Communication with such interstellar craft will experience years of delay due to the speed of light. Collisions with cosmic dust and gas at such speeds can be catastrophic for such spacecrafts. Crewed interstellar travel could possibly be conducted more slowly (far beyond the scale of a human lifetime) by making a generation ship. Hypothetical interstellar propulsion systems include nuclear pulse propulsion, fission-fragment rocket, fusion rocket, beamed solar sail, and antimatter rocket. The benefits of interstellar travel include detailed surveys of habitable exop ...

He first appears in the original ''Star Wars'' film as the loyal friend of the smuggler Han Solo. He is also the co-pilot of Han's starship, the '' Millennium Falcon''. Chewbacca is portrayed by Peter Mayhew in the original film trilogy, the '' Star Wars Holiday Special'' (1978), and ''Revenge of the Sith'' (2005). Mayhew shares the Chewbacca role with his body double, Joonas Suotamo, in '' The Force Awakens'' (2015). Following Mayhew's retirement in 2017, Suotamo took over the role, appearing in '' The Last Jedi'' (2017) and '' The Rise of Skywalker'' (2019). Stormtrooper (Star Wars)
Stormtroopers are fictional soldiers in the ''Star Wars'' franchise created by George Lucas. Introduced in the original ''Star Wars'' film trilogy (1977–1983), the Stormtroopers are the shock troops/ space marines of the autocratic Galactic Empire. Their predecessors, the clone troopers of the Galactic Republic, were used by Emperor Palpatine to take over the government and exterminate the Jedi. After the fall of the Empire, as depicted in the original trilogy, Stormtroopers remained in service to Imperial remnants, such as the First Order. The order of battle of the Stormtrooper Corps is unspecified in the ''Star Wars'' universe. Accompanying the Imperial Navy, Stormtroopers are able to be deployed swiftly and respond to states of civil unrest or insurrection, act as a planetary garrison, and police areas within the Galactic Empire. They are shown in collective groups of varying organizational sizes ranging from squads to legions and for some, their armour and tra ...

Particle Beam
A particle beam is a stream of charged particle, charged or neutral particles other than photons. In Particle accelerator, particle accelerators, these particles can move with a velocity close to the speed of light. There is a difference between the creation and control of charged particle beams and neutral particle beams, as only the first type can be manipulated to a sufficient extent by devices based on electromagnetism. The manipulation and diagnostics of charged particle beams at high kinetic energies using particle accelerators are main topics of accelerator physics. Sources Charged particles such as electrons, positrons, and protons may be separated from their common surroundings. This can be accomplished by processes such as thermionic emission or arc discharge. The following devices are commonly used as sources for particle beams: * Ion source * Cathode-ray tube, or more specifically in one of its parts called electron gun. This is also part of traditional television and ...

Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri (, α Cen, or Alpha Cen) is a star system in the southern constellation of Centaurus (constellation), Centaurus. It consists of three stars: Rigil Kentaurus (), Toliman (), and Proxima Centauri (). Proxima Centauri is the List of nearest stars, closest star to the Sun at 4.2465 light-years (ly) which is 1.3020 parsecs (pc). Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman are Sun-like stars (G-type main-sequence star, class G and K-type main-sequence star, K, respectively) that together form the binary star system . To the naked eye, these two main components appear to be a single star with an apparent magnitude of −0.27. It is the brightest star in the constellation and the List of brightest stars, third-brightest in the night sky, outshone by only Sirius and Canopus. Rigil Kentaurus has 1.1 times the Solar mass, mass () and 1.5 times the Solar luminosity, luminosity of the Sun (), while Toliman is smaller and cooler, at and less than . The pair ...

Proxima Centauri
Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to Earth after the Sun, located 4.25 light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus. This object was discovered in 1915 by Robert T. A. Innes, Robert Innes. It is a small, low-mass star, too faint to be seen with the naked eye, with an apparent magnitude of 11.13. Its Latin language, Latin name means the 'nearest [star] of Centaurus'. Proxima Centauri is a member of the Alpha Centauri star system, being identified as component Alpha Centauri C, and is 2.18° to the southwest of the Alpha Centauri AB pair. It is currently from AB, which it orbits with a orbital period, period of about 550,000 years. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star with a mass about 12.5% of the Sun's mass (), and average density about 33 times that of the Sun. Because of Proxima Centauri's proximity to Earth, its angular diameter can be measured directly. Its actual diameter is about one-seventh (14%) the diameter of the Sun. A ...

Jeanne Cavelos
Jeanne Cavelos (born May 26, 1960) is an American science fiction writer, editor, and former NASA astrophysicist. She is the founder and a main director of the Odyssey Writing Workshop. She is the author of ''The Science of Star Wars'' and is the first person documented saying " May the 4th Be with You," which has led to the creation of "Star Wars Day" on May 4th. Early life and scientific career Cavelos began writing science fiction as a child, but wanted to do something that she felt was more important. Inspired by Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes, Cavelos decided to study astrophysics with the goal of becoming an astronaut. She went on to receive her BS in astronomy from Michigan State University in 1982. Cavelos first worked as an astrophysicist and mathematician. She taught astronomy at Michigan State University and Cornell University and worked at the Astronaut Training Museum at NASA's Johnson Space Center. However, she became dissatisfied with working in astronom ...
