Phyllodoce Empetriformis
''Phyllodoce empetriformis'', also known as pink mountain heather, gets its name from its red and pink bell-shaped flowers. It is found along the Rocky Mountains of the Northwestern United States and Western Canada. ''Phyllodoce empetriformis'' is a low matting shrub with distinctive leaves which are pine needle like. It bears attractive flowers in shades of pink and purple. It is one of the parents of the artificial hybrid × ''Phyllothamnus erectus'', the other being '' Rhodothamnus chamaecistus''. Description This common evergreen alpine shrub bears its red-purple flower clustered at the end of the stem. The flowers of the ''Phyllodoce empetriformis'' can grow in clusters of many to as little as one. The leaves alternate on the stem and roll under themselves so tightly they resemble pine needles. James Edward Smith (botanist)
Sir James Edward Smith (2 December 1759 – 17 March 1828) was an English botanist and founder of the Linnean Society. Early life and education Smith was born in Norwich in 1759, the son of a wealthy wool merchant. He started studying botanical science when he was eighteen. In 1781 he enrolled in the medical course at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied chemistry under Joseph Black, natural history under John Walker, and botany under John Hope, an early teacher of Linnaean taxonomy. He moved to London in 1783 to continue his studies and became a friend of Sir Joseph Banks, who was offered the entire collection of books, manuscripts and specimens of the Swedish natural historian and botanist Carl Linnaeus following the death of his son Carolus Linnaeus the Younger. David Don (21 December 1799 – 15 December 1841) was a Scottish botanist. Biography David Don was born on 21 December 1799 at Doo Hillock, Forfar, Angus, Scotland to Caroline Clementina Stuart, and her husband George Don of Forfar.
