Philips Sports Manager Of The Year
The Philips Sports Manager of the Year is an award for the person considered the most outstanding Irish sports manager or coach of a particular year. The award is contested by the twelve winners of the year's Philips Sports Manager of the Month Awards, which are open to Irish sports managers, trainers or coaches, or overseas-born managers of Irish teams. Because the annual ceremony is traditionally held in early December each year, the December winner from the previous year is eligible to compete. Unusually, the award was instigated not by a sporting body or journalists' association, but by the event sponsors themselves, Philips in 1982. There have been joint-winners twice. First in 1990, as the achievement of Cork GAA winning the first All-Ireland hurling and football double in exactly 100 years saw respective managers Fr. Michael O'Brien and Billy Morgan honoured. Pat Henderson (hurler)
Pat Henderson (born 30 January 1943) is an Irish retired hurling manager and former player. Born in Johnstown, County Kilkenny, Henderson first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Thurles CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of eighteen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later joining the under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the 1964 championship. Henderson went on to play a key role over the next fifteen years, and one five All-Ireland medals, eight Leinster medals and two National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on five occasions. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Henderson won six Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a one-time Leinster medallist with Fenians, in addition to this he also won five championship medals. Pete McGrath
Peter McGrath (born 6 June 1953), from Rostrevor, County Down, is an Irish former Gaelic footballer and current manager. He managed the Down senior football team to the All-Ireland titles in 1991 and 1994. Professional career McGrath was employed for almost thirty years as a physical education teacher at St Colman's College, Newry. He retired from this position in 2006. Jim McLaughlin (footballer)
James Christopher McLaughlin (22 December 1940 – 15 August 2024) was a Northern Irish footballer and was a football manager in the League of Ireland. Playing career The 16-year-old McLaughlin made his Irish League debut for home-town club Derry City in the 1957–58 season. He scored in his first match, against Crusaders, and was his club's top scorer, with 16 goals, in that debut season. He joined English First Division club Birmingham City as an apprentice in the summer of 1958. After two years of reserve team football he moved on to Shrewsbury Town. In his first season there McLaughlin netted twenty goals for his club. Having gained three youth caps with Derry City his efforts at Shrewsbury did not go unnoticed by the IFA and he was capped by them twice at under-23 level. Mick Doyle (13 October 1941 – 11 May 2004) was an Ireland national rugby union team, Irish rugby union international player and coach. Youth and playing career Doyle was born in Currow, County Kerry, and began playing rugby union at Newbridge College, County Kildare. He went on to study veterinary science at University College Dublin, who he also represented at University College Dublin R.F.C., rugby.
