Petite Mort (dance Work)
''Petite Mort'' is a contemporary ballet choreographed by Jiří Kylián to music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The ballet is danced by a cast of twelve, alternating between duets and group sequences. The ballet was created for the Salzburg Festival, in commemoration of the bicentenary of Mozart's death. It premiered on 23 August 1991, at the Großes Festspielhaus. Choreography and analysis The French title of ''Petite Mort'' refers to "little death", a euphemism for orgasm. The ballet is set to the Adagio from Piano Concerto No. 23 and Andante from Piano Concerto No. 21, both slow movements from two of Mozart's most popular piano concertos, contrasting with the physicality of the choreography. Kylián explained, "This deliberate choice should not be seen as a provocation or thoughtlessness – rather as my way to acknowledge the fact that I am living and working as part of a world where nothing is sacred, where brutality and arbitrariness are commonplace." The Kansas City Ballet (KCB) is an American professional ballet company based in Kansas City, Missouri. The company was founded in 1957 by Russian expatriate Tatiana Dokoudovska. The KCB presents five major performances each season to include an annual production of ''The Nutcracker''. In the 2016–2017 season, KCB grew to an all-time high with 30 company dancers, 15 second company dancers, 64 full-time and part-time staff, and a network of over 400 local volunteers. Jorma Elo is a contemporary choreographer. Early life He was born 30 August 1961 in Helsinki, Finland. His father, Jaakko Elo, is a urological surgeon, mother Ruth Elo née Carlstedt, a dentist. Jorma Elo's partner since 1994 is Nancy Euverink who has also been assistant to Elo. As a schoolboy, Elo wanted to be an ice hockey player, despite this he began studying modern and jazz dance at 12. At the age of 13 he was enrolled in Finnish National Ballet School for classical training. Later, 1979–80, he studied in the Kirov Ballet School ( Vaganova Academy), which under the Soviet era was the name of the Maryinsky Ballet School in St. Petersburg.
