The Pequot ( ) are a Native American people of Connecticut. Mashantucket Pequot Museum And Research Center
The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center is a museum of Native American culture in Mashantucket, Connecticut, owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. Overview The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, located near the tribe's Foxwoods Resort Casino, opened August 11, 1998. The facility was built at a cost of $193.4 million, largely funded by casino revenues. It includes a museum and resources for scholarly research on the histories and cultures of the native peoples of the United States and Canada. Poospatuck Reservation
The Poospatuck Reservation is a Native American reservation of the Unkechaugi band in the community of Mastic, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is one of two Native American reservations in Suffolk County, the other being the Shinnecock Reservation. The population was 436 at the 2020 census. The Unkechaugi are descendants of the Quiripi-speaking Native Americans, who occupied much of southern New England and central Long Island at the time of European encounter in the colonial era. Historically they spoke an Algonquian language. They have retained a community; the reservation is the smallest in New York State. The current 55 acre reservation was originally set aside for the Unkechaugs as a 175-acre plot by William "Tangier" Smith after he purchased large tracts of land from Unkechaug John Mayhew in 1691. Golden Hill Paugussett Indian Nation
The Golden Hill Paugussett is a state-recognized Native American tribe in Connecticut. Granted reservations in a number of towns in the 17th century, their land base was whittled away until they were forced to reacquire a small amount of territory in the 19th century. Today they retain a state-recognized reservation in the town of Trumbull, and have an additional reservation acquired in 1978 and 1980 in Colchester, Connecticut. They descend from the historic Quiripi-speaking Paugussett, an Algonguian-speaking nation who historically occupied much of western Connecticut prior to the arrival of European colonists. They are among the five tribes recognized by the state. They were denied federal recognition in 2004. Schaghticoke Tribal Nation
The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation (STN) is a state-recognized tribe in Connecticut. STN is not a federally recognized American Indian tribe. STN is not to be confused with the splinter group Schaghticoke Indian Tribe (SIT), another state-recognized tribe in Connecticut. History The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation has sought federal recognition since 1981. In 1986, a splinter group split off from STN and is known as the Schaghticoke Indian Tribe (SIT). Both STN and SIT are state-recognized in Connecticut, but not federally recognized. STN was granted federal recognition in 2004. However, federal recognition was revoked in 2005. STN has pursued restoration of their federal recognition. In 2015, STN was informed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs that they could not re-petition for federal recognition. Mohegan Tribe
The Mohegan Tribe ( ) is a federally recognized Native American tribe and sovereign tribal nation based in Uncasville, Connecticut. Historically part of the Pequot people, the Mohegan emerged as a distinct group in the 17th century under the leadership of Uncas, who allied with English colonists during the Pequot War (1637–1638) and established the tribe’s independence through the Treaty of Hartford (1638). The Mohegan Tribe gained formal federal recognition from the United States government in 1994 through the Mohegan Nation (Connecticut) Land Claim Settlement Act, which also established their modern reservation on the Thames River.
