Penthouse Party (radio Program)
''Penthouse Party'' is an American television variety series that aired on ABC from September 15, 1950, until June 8, 1951. Format ''Penthouse Party'' was hosted by Betty Furness and was set in her penthouse. Pianist Buddy Weed and singer Don Cherry were regulas on the program. Each episode began with Furness inviting viewers to "Come on inside and meet all the folks." Most celebrity guests were active in music or theater in New York, and they often demonstrated talents not associated with their public images. Guests who appeared on the program included Joan Blondell. Production The 30-minute show was produced by Lester Lewis, and ran for 39 episodes. From September to December 1950, the show aired Fridays from 10 to 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time. From January 5, 1951, to June 1951, the show aired Fridays from 8:30 to 9 p.m. E T. Variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is entertainment made up of a variety of acts including musical performances, sketch comedy, magic, acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism. It is normally introduced by a compère (master of ceremonies) or host. The variety format made its way from the Victorian era stage in Britain and America to radio and then television. Variety shows were a staple of English language television from the late 1940s into the 1980s. Betty Furness
Elizabeth Mary Furness (January 3, 1916 – April 2, 1994) was an American actress, consumer advocate, and current affairs commentator. Early years Furness was born in Manhattan, the daughter of wealthy business executive George Choate Furness and his wife Florence. She attended the Brearley School and Bennett Junior College. Acting career Furness made her stage debut in the school holidays in the title role of ''Alice in Wonderland''. She also posed for commercial advertising. She began her professional career as a model before being noticed by a talent scout and being signed to a film contract in 1932 by RKO Studios. Her first film role was as the "Thirteenth Woman" in the film '' Thirteen Women'' (1932) but her scenes were deleted before the film's release. Anita Ellis (née Kert, later Shapiro; April 12, 1920 – October 28, 2015) was a Canadian-born American singer and actress. She famously dubbed Rita Hayworth's songs in '' Gilda''. Early years Anita Kert was born in Montreal, Quebec, the eldest of four children born to Orthodox Jewish parents, Harry and Lillian "Libbie" Kert (née Pearson; originally Peretz). Donald Ross Cherry (January 11, 1924 – April 4, 2018) was an American traditional pop and big band singer and golfer. In music, he is best known for his 1955 hit " Band of Gold". Biography Cherry was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. He started in his early 20s as a big band singer in the orchestras of Jan Garber and Victor Young. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces. In 1951, he recorded his first solo hits, " Thinking of You" and "Belle, Belle, My Liberty Belle". In 1955, came his biggest hit, "Band of Gold", which reached No. 4 on the ''Billboard'' chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The track peaked at No. 6 in the UK Singles Chart. He had three more hits in 1956: "Wild Cherry", "Ghost Town", and "Namely You", all backed by orchestra leader Ray Conniff.
