Paulina or Paullina (, ) was a name shared by three relatives of the Roman Emperor Hadrian: his mother, his elder sister and his niece. Mother of Hadrian Domitia Paulina or Paullina, Domitia Paulina Major or Paulina Major, (''Major'' Latin for ''the elder''), also known as Paulina the Elder (?-85/86). Paulina was a Roman woman born in Spain who lived in the 1st century. She was a daughter of a distinguished senatorial family. Paulina originally came from Gades (modern Cádiz, Spain). Gades was one of the wealthiest Roman cities. Little is known of the life of Paulina. Paulina is an unincorporated community located in Blairstown in Warren County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Paulina is located on the Paulins Kill, approximately east of downtown Blairstown. History Around 1768, William Armstrong constructed a grist mill there, which remained for more than a century. A second grist mill was constructed in Paulina in 1783 by Peter B. Shafer. That mill was later used as an axe-helve factory and saw mill. By 1851, Paulina had a post office, and by 1882 the population was 110. In 1890, a grist mill was still located there. In 1895, the Paulina Dam, also known as the Paulina Lake Dam, was built on the Paulins Kill. Rated a "significant hazard" by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the process of removing it started in December 2023. Paulina is an 'L' station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Brown Line. It is an elevated station with two side platforms, located at 3410 North Lincoln Avenue (3400 N; 1700 W), in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, close to Roscoe Village. The stations that are adjacent to Paulina are Addison, about three eighths of a mile (0.6 km) to the northwest and Southport, about three eighths of a mile (0.6 km) to the east. History Paulina Station opened in 1907 as part of the Northwestern Elevated Railroad's Ravenswood branch. The station closed on September 2, 1973, but reopened on October 17 of the same year. Upon reopening, the station was only open on weekdays from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Paulina (1804–1819) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes in 1807. In a racing career which lasted from August 1806 until October 1809 she won nine times from fourteen races, all of which took place in Yorkshire. She was undefeated in three races as an unnamed two-year-old, before winning three of her four races in 1807 including the St Leger at Doncaster and a valuable produce sweepstakes at York. She won once from two starts as a four-year-old before winning a Great Subscription Purse at York and a King's Plate at Richmond in 1809. She had a long rivalry with another Yorkshire mare named Thomasina, winning three of their five meetings. Paulina was retired to stud where she became the female-line ancestor of many important winners including Andover and Sir Tatton Sykes. Paulina (died ) was a late Roman aristocrat and philanthropist, who was the wife of Pammachius and the daughter of St Paula. Letters of condolence were written at her death by Paulinus of Nola and St Jerome. Biography Little is known about Paulina's early life. Her parents were St Paula and Toxotius, both were from Roman noble families. They had five children: Toxotius, Blesilla, Paulina, Eustochium, and Rufina. In 385, the same year her mother left for the East, Paulina married Pammachius, who was a Roman senator; he was also her mother's cousin. The couple lived in a ''domus'' on the site of what is now Santi Giovanni e Paolo al Celio in Rome. A Christian shrine was built within their home, however the date of construction can only be narrowed to 385–410, so it is unclear the extent to which Paulina may have been involved in its construction.
