Paul Anthony Michael McDermott (born 13 May 1962) is an Australian entertainer, best known both for '' Good News Week'' and for his role as a member of the musical comedy group the Doug Anthony All Stars. He has frequently appeared at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and taken part in its two major televised productions, the Comedy Festival Gala and the Great Debate. McDermott has also performed and written numerous shows as a solo performer and authored children’s books and newspaper articles and directed short animated films. Personal life McDermott was born in Adelaide, South Australia, a fraternal twin and one of six children in a Catholic family. Paul McDermott (born 1959) is an Irish judge who currently serves as a Judge of the High Court. Early life McDermott attended University College Dublin and the King's Inns. Legal career He became a barrister in 1980 and subsequently became a senior counsel in 1999. His practice was primarily focused on criminal law. He was counsel for the Morris Tribunal, which addressed allegations against the Garda Síochána. He received €3.2 million in fees, which was the highest amount paid to any of the tribunal's lawyers. He is the author of legal texts on the Misuse of Drugs Act and the law of prisons in Ireland. Judicial career McDermott was appointed to the High Court in June 2012. Paul Anthony McDermott, SC (4 February 1972 – 10 December 2019) was an English-born Irish lawyer and academic. He was a prominent criminal barrister who often prosecuted cases in the Irish superior courts. He was also known as a lecturer in law at University College Dublin and for frequent commentary on legal matters in the Irish media. Early life and education McDermott was born in London and studied in St Paul's College, Raheny when his family returned to Ireland. He studied law at University College Dublin, at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and at the King's Inns. He held a PhD from UCD. He won the Irish Times Debate for the King's Inns in 1996.
