''Paul Clifford'' is a novel published in 1830 by English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton. It tells the life of Paul Clifford, a man who leads a dual life as both a criminal and an upscale gentleman. The book was successful upon its release. It is best known for its opening phrase " It was a dark and stormy night...", which helped inspire the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest. Plot ''Paul Clifford'' tells the story of a chivalrous highwayman in the time of the French Revolution. Brought up not knowing his origins, he falls in with a gang of highwaymen. While disguised as a gentleman for the purposes of a confidence trick, he meets and falls in love with Lucy Brandon. Clifford is arrested for a highway robbery and brought before her uncle, Judge Brandon, for trial, where it is unexpectedly revealed that Clifford is Brandon's son. The Wonder Stuff are a British alternative rock musical ensemble, band. Originally based in Stourbridge in the West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England, the band's first lineup released four albums and nearly 20 singles and EPs, enjoying considerable chart and live success in the UK. The band have continued to tour and record since 2000. Largely the vehicle for the songwriting of Miles Hunt, the band split up with a farewell performance as headliners of the Phoenix Festival#1994, 1994 Phoenix Festival, but reformed in 2000 and have toured and recorded since then, with Hunt the anchor member of all line-ups. Known for their catchy songs and Hunt's sharp lyrics, the band's sound evolved from guitar pop to include sampling and elements of folk and country. Paul Clifford (born 19 September 1976) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Wiltshire. He was born in Swindon Swindon () is a town in Wiltshire, England. At the time of the 2021 Census the population of the built-up area was 183,638, making it the largest settlement in the county. Clifford made his cricketing debut during the 1993 Second XI Championship for Somerset, before joining Wiltshire in the Minor Counties Championship the following season. Despite taking the following two seasons out of the game, he returned to the team in 1997. Clifford made his only List A appearance for the team during the 1999 NatWest Trophy competition.
