Pat Clark (speedway Rider)
Patrick Joseph Gerrard Clark commonly spelt Clarke (25 July 1927 – July 2011) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Clark started racing in the British leagues during the 1949 Speedway National League Division Three season, when riding for the newly formed Rayleigh Rockets. He recorded a 6.50 points average for the season, riding 48 times for the club. Oxford Cheetahs, who had finished bottom of the table during their inaugural league season in 1949, signed an entirely new set of riders including Pat Clark from Rayleigh for £250; others included Harry Saunders, signed as captain from Tamworth for £750, Bill Osborne from Walthamstow, Raymond Buster Brown from Wembley and Eric Irons from Cradley. The team rose spectacularly up the league to win the league and cup double. England National Speedway Team
The Great Britain national speedway team (formerly the England speedway team) is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway. The team is managed by former Great Britain riders Oliver Allen and Simon Stead, and captained by the Tai Woffinden. The team raced as England from 1928 to 1961 and again from 1974 to 2000. They have raced as Great Britain from 1962 to 1973 and since 2001. History The national speedway team held test matches against the Australia as early as 1928, although the first official test match is listed as 30 June 1930 at Wimbledon Stadium. The team won the Speedway World Team Cup on five occasions as England and four times as Great Britain from 1968 to 1989. They were a major force in the 1970s, winning five consecutive tournaments, two as England and three as Great Britain. 1951 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1951 National League Division Two was the sixth post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The League was extended again with 18 teams starting the season. New entrants were Motherwell Eagles and there were again three teams promoted from Division Three - the champions Oxford Cheetahs, third-place finishers Leicester Hunters and Liverpool Chads (despite finishing 8th). Plymouth Devils moved back down in the opposite direction. Norwich Stars retained their title. However, after the season had finished a fourth rider in five years was killed at their Firs Stadium. 21-year-old Bob Howes died after hitting the fence during a training practice race on 10 November 1951. Southampton Saints and Sheffield Tigers resigned in mid-season and their records were expunged. The British Newspaper Archive website provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library's Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. Rayleigh Rockets
The Rayleigh Rockets were a Motorcycle speedway, Speedway team which operated from 1949 until their closure in 1973 from the Rayleigh Weir Stadium in Rayleigh, Essex, Rayleigh, Essex . History Origins and 1940s In June 1948, the Speedway Control Board granted a permit for speedway to be held at the recently constructed Rayleigh Weir Stadium. The first was a challenge match on 17 July 1948. The following season the club organised a training school for novices and Messrs. 1949 Speedway National League Division Three
The 1949 National League Division Three was the third season of British speedway's National League Division Three. The league expanded to 13 teams from 12. Cradley Heath, Southampton and Coventry had all moved up to Division Two whilst Wombwell dropped out. The five new sides were Liverpool Chads, Leicester Hunters, Rayleigh Rockets, Oxford Cheetahs and Halifax Dukes. The latter racing on a new speedway track at The Shay. Swindon Robins joined the league late in the season, when Reg Witcomb applied to the Speedway Control Board to take over the remaining fixtures of Hull Angels, who had withdrawn from the league. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to .
