The Party of the South () was a Chilean regionalist political party. It existed between 1987 and 1998. History Origins and foundation (1983–1990) The Party of the South originated in the Southern Socialist Democratic Movement (also known as "South Wind"), founded in Valdivia on September 3, 1983, by Carlos Podlech, then president of the National Association of Wheat Growers. It was mainly composed of former militants of the National Party and was defined as a regionalist and environmental movement. The political party was founded by Eduardo Díaz Herrera in 1987, presenting the charter before the Chilean Electoral Service on April 21 of that year. The state agency filed objections to such deed six days after being given the final document on May 11. It was officially declared as "forming party" on May 23, 1987, which had a period of 210 days to register the minimum number of members. Independent Democratic Union
The Independent Democratic Union (''Unión Demócrata Independiente'', UDI) is a conservative and right-wing political party in Chile, founded in 1983. Its founder was the lawyer, politician, law professor and senator Jaime Guzmán, a civilian allied with Augusto Pinochet. Its ideological origins date back to Guzmán's Guildist Movement, born out of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in 1966, espousing the independence and depoliticization of intermediate bodies of civil society. The UDI is today a conservative political party with strong links to the Opus Dei, that opposes abortion in nearly all or all cases. Arturo Alessandri Besa (31 October 1923 – 13 July 2022) was a Chilean lawyer and politician. Alliance (Chile)
The Alliance (), previously known as Alliance for Chile (), is a coalition of centre-right to right-wing Chilean political parties. The Alliance was replaced between 2009 and 2012 by the Coalition for Change and since 2015 by Chile Vamos. It includes the National Renewal (Renovación Nacional, RN), the Independent Democratic Union (Unión Democrática Independiente, UDI) and since 2015 Political Evolution (Evolución Política, Evópoli). Saavedra, Chile
Saavedra () is a commune of Chile in Cautín Province, Araucanía Region. The principal community and administrative centre of the commune is the town of Puerto Saavedra. The commune is named after the Chilean soldier General Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez who was placed in charge of the occupation of the Araucanía in 1860. It has the highest percentage—though not the largest number—of Mapuche people in the region (64%, 2002 census). Location for the 1991 movie "La frontera". Toltén
Toltén is a Chilean commune located at the lower flows Toltén River at the southern coast of Cautín Province which is part of Araucanía Region. The commune is administered by the municipality Nueva Toltén, the main harbour and town within the commune. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Toltén spans an area of and has 11,216 inhabitants (5,827 men and 5,389 women). Of these, 4,123 (36.8%) lived in urban areas and 7,093 (63.2%) in rural areas. The population fell by 7% (845 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.
