Paramaribo District
Paramaribo is a district of Suriname, coextensive with the capital city of Paramaribo. Paramaribo district has a population of 240,924, almost half the population of the entire country, and an area of 182 km2. The area was first colonised by the British in the 17th century with the construction of Fort Willoughby. This fort was later taken by the Netherlands and renamed Fort Zeelandia. The area, and the city of Paramaribo, switched between Dutch and British control until the Treaty of Breda at the end of the Second Anglo-Dutch War ceded all of Suriname to the Dutch. Blauwgrond
Blauwgrond is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 31,483. Blauwgrond started as a Javanese village to the north of Paramaribo. During the 1960s and 1970s, large scale building projects turned the village into a neighbourhood of Paramaribo, and is mainly known as the Javanese culinary centre with many ''warungs'' and restaurants. The resort was called Blauwgrond (English: Blue Ground), because the earth had a bluish colour. Leonsberg is a former coffee plantation in the northern part of Blauwgrond. It was founded by A. Weg naar Zee is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 16,037, and has a large East Indian population. The name can be translated as "road to sea", and it is indeed the road to the sea. Rainville, Suriname
Rainville is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 22,747. The Rainville resort is home to the Paramaribo Zoo. The zoo was opened in 1972. Unlike most zoos, about 75% of the animals are local wild animals who had been either confiscated or were former pets. Combé Rainville is home to the Combé neighbourhood. It started as a plantation, and was turned into a village in 1791. The neighbourhood has been named after Nicolaas Combé, a French huguenot and one of the early colonists, who was persuaded to move to Suriname from Berbice. Centrum is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 20,631. The historical centre of Paramaribo is located within the resort. The city centre is mainly in original condition, contains 291 listed monuments, and has of 2002 been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. History Paramaribo was founded in 1613 by Stoffel Albertszoon near the indigenous village Parmurbo. Around 1665, during the British occupation, the village was expanded and quickly outranked the earlier settlement of Torarica.
