Panagrolaimus Kolymaensis
''Panagrolaimus kolymaensis'' is a species of nematode. The species was named after the Kolyma River in Russia, where the first two specimens were discovered. In 2023, it was reported that nematodes of the previously undescribed ''Panagrolaimus kolymaensis'' were revived after 46,000 years in cryptobiosis. However, a number of scientists expressed skepticism regarding the accuracy of the age analysis for these worms. Phylogenetic analysis and genome comparison with ''C. elegans'' revealed that the species shared mechanisms for cryptobiotic survival. The nematodes ( or ; ; ), roundworms or eelworms constitute the phylum Nematoda. Species in the phylum inhabit a broad range of environments. Most species are free-living, feeding on microorganisms, but many are parasitic. Parasitic worms (helminths) are the cause of soil-transmitted helminthiases. They are classified along with arthropods, tardigrades and other moulting animals in the clade Ecdysozoa. Unlike the flatworms, nematodes have a tubular digestive system, with openings at both ends. Like tardigrades, they have a reduced number of Hox genes, but their sister phylum Nematomorpha has kept the ancestral protostome Hox genotype, which shows that the reduction has occurred within the nematode phylum. Kolyma (river)
The Kolyma (, ; ) is a river in northeastern Siberia, whose basin covers parts of the Sakha Republic, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and Magadan Oblast of Russia. The Kolyma is frozen to depths of several metres for about 250 days each year, becoming free of ice only in early June, until October. Course The Kolyma begins at the confluence of the Kulu (river), Kulu and the Ayan-Yuryakh (Kolyma a natural continuation of Ayan-Yuryakh). ''Caenorhabditis elegans'' () is a free-living transparent nematode about 1 mm in length that lives in temperate soil environments. It is the type species of its genus. The name is a Hybrid word, blend of the Greek ''caeno-'' (recent), ''rhabditis'' (rod-like) and Latin ''elegans'' (elegant). In 1900, Émile Maupas, Maupas initially named it ''Rhabditidae, Rhabditides elegans.''
