Palatino
Palatino is an old-style serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf, initially released in 1949 by the Stempel foundry and later by other companies, most notably the Mergenthaler Linotype Company. Palatino is optimised for legibility with open counters, balanced proportions, moderate stroke contrast and flared serifs. Background Named after the 16th-century Italian master of calligraphy Giambattista Palatino, Palatino is based on the humanist types of the Italian Renaissance, which mirror the letters formed by a broad nib pen reflecting Zapf's expertise as a calligrapher. Its capital 'Y' is in the unusual 'palm Y' style, inspired by the Greek letter upsilon, a trait found in some of the earliest versions of the letter such as that of Aldus Manutius. Palatino Express
The Palatino Express or Rome Express is a historic express train operating between Paris, France, and Rome, Italy, since 1890. Under the name ''Rome Express'' the pre-war service operated daily until interrupted by the Second World War. The British film ''Rome Express'' (1932) derived its title and its setting from the train. The service was resumed after the war, and has operated with the name ''Palatino Express'' since 1969. Route The original ''Rome Express'' route operated from Calais-Maritime, a coastal railway station providing a direct connection between cross-channel ferries from England and the French railway network, via Paris, Aix-les-Bains, Modane, Turin, Genoa, Pisa, and Florence to Rome. On 21 January 1893 the route was changed to run via Marseilles, Nice, San Remo and Genoa, instead of via Mont Cenis and Turin. In 1897 the route reverted to Mont Cenis. Palatine Hill
The Palatine Hill (; Classical Latin: ''Palatium''; Neo-Latin: ''Collis/Mons Palatinus''; ), which relative to the seven hills of Rome is the centremost, is one of the most ancient parts of the city; it has been called "the first nucleus of the Roman Empire". The site is now mainly a large open-air museum whilst the Palatine Museum houses many finds from the excavations here and from other ancient Italian sites. Imperial palaces were built there, starting with Augustus. Before imperial times the hill was mostly occupied by the houses of the rich. The hill originally had two summits separated by a depression: the higher summit was called ''Palatium''; the lower ''Germalus'' (or ''Cermalus''). Giovanni Battista Palatino
Giovanni Battista Palatino ( 1515 - 1575), also known as Giambattista, was an Italian calligrapher. He was born in Rossano, Calabria, but moved to Rome as a young man. In 1538, Palatino acquired Roman citizenship, much to his pride. Palatino's ''Libro nuovo d'imparare a scrivere'' is the best-known Renaissance treatise on calligraphy. He dedicated it to the ''Academia dello sdegno'' (Academy of the Disdainful), of which he was secretary. As a calligrapher, Palatino was fascinated by ciphers and generally by the metamorphosis of the alphabet. Raymond "Mong" de Vera Palatino (born December 19, 1979) is a Filipino writer, journalist, politician, and activist. He represented Kabataan Partylist in the 14th and 15th Congress of the Philippines. He is currently the secretary-general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan. As a writer, he was a contributor for ''Tinig'', ''Yehey!'' and ''UPI-Asia''.
