Packer Farm And Barkersville Store
Packer Farm and Barkersville Store is a historic farm and general store and national historic district located at Middle Grove, Saratoga County, New York. The district encompasses four contributing buildings and one contributing structure in the Town of Providence. They are the Packer house (c. 1825-1859), frame English barn (c. 1825 and later), frame store (c. 1893 and later), second frame barn with attached shed (c. 1860), and a dam. The Packer house is a two-story, frame dwelling moved to its present location about 1857, along with the English barn. The house exhibits Federal and Greek Revival style design elements. Providence is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The Town of Providence is on the county's western border and is northwest of Saratoga Springs. More than half the town is located within the Adirondack Park, the town also borders the Great Sacandaga Lake. History The area was settled before 1786, but that was the year of any definite settlement, located by Hagedorns Mills. The town was formed from part of the Town of Galway in 1796. The early economy was based on forestry with the harvesting of lumber, and the manufacture of pulpwood being important. The Greek Revival was an architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832.
