Pacific Coast Hockey League
The Pacific Coast Hockey League was an ice hockey minor league with teams in the western United States and western Canada that existed in three incarnations: from 1928 to 1931, from 1936 to 1941, and from 1944 to 1952. PCHL 1928–1931 The first incarnation of the PCHL had four teams and lasted three seasons. Brothers Frank Patrick (ice hockey), Frank Patrick and Lester Patrick, financed by their wealthy lumberman father Joseph Patrick, founded it and operated franchises in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, Victoria, with Frank, one of the founders of the earlier Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) as president. The Vancouver Lions won the league's championship all three seasons and played in all five seasons of the second version of the league, winning its final two championships in 1940 and 1941. Portland Buckaroos
The Portland Buckaroos was the name of several professional ice hockey teams based in Portland, Oregon. PCHL/NWHL era (1928–1941) The first incarnation of Portland Buckaroos played their home games at the Portland Ice Arena (Oregon), Portland Ice Arena. The Buckaroos initially played in the four-team Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) from 1928 to 1931. The PCHL folded in 1931, and in 1933, the Buckaroos joined the new North West Hockey League. In 1936, the Buckaroos rejoined the reconstituted four-team PCHL, and won league championships in 1937 and 1939. With the onset of World War II, the PCHL folded again in 1941. Western Hockey League (1952–1974)
The Western Hockey League (WHL) was a Minor league, minor professional ice hockey league based in Western Canada that operated from 1952 to 1974. The league was managed for most of its history by Al Leader, and had roots in the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Canada Senior Hockey League. Al Leader
George Alfred "Al" Leader (December 4, 1903 – May 8, 1982) was a Canadian-American ice hockey player, referee, and administrator. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the "Builder" category. Leader settled in Seattle, Washington, in the 1930s and became involved in hockey as the administrator of the Seattle City League. He worked as a player, referee, and administrator at the city level for several years before organizing the Defense Hockey League in 1940, which involved five teams from Seattle and Portland, Oregon. In 1944, Leader was elected as the secretary-manager of the Pacific Coast Hockey League. Throughout the decade, Leader worked to manage and promote amateur hockey on the west coast, also taking on an administrative role with the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States. Hockey Hall Of Fame
The Hockey Hall of Fame () is a museum and hall of fame located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dedicated to the history of ice hockey, it holds exhibits about players, teams, National Hockey League (NHL) records, memorabilia and National Hockey League awards, NHL trophies, including the Stanley Cup. Spokane Bombers
The Spokane Bombers were a minor professional ice hockey team from Spokane, Washington that played in the Pacific Coast Hockey League. History In 1936, three teams from the North West Hockey League made plans to reform the PCHL and included a new franchise from Spokane in their plans. The Spokane Indians were scheduled to begin play in the fall of 1936, however, before the team played its first game, owner Arthur C. Rud changed tack and relocated the team to Oakland, California. The renamed club began play as the 'Clippers' but very quickly discovered several problems with their move. The team's home arena, the Oakland Ice Rink, had several columns in the stands that led to obstructed views. That problem was secondary, however, to the dearth of spectators as the team did not draw many fans for their games. The Seattle Sea Hawks (sometimes written as Seattle Seahawks) were a minor professional hockey team based in Seattle, Washington, playing at the Civic Ice Arena.
