P & A Campbell was a shipping company based in Bristol which operated steamship services in the Bristol Channel between 1893 and 1979. History In the early 19th century, steamships were introduced to Europe with Clyde steamer sailings which grew rapidly, with many private shipowners taking trippers and commuters from Glasgow down the River Clyde to previously remote areas where holiday houses had been developed around the Firth of Clyde. Robert Campbell, known as "Captain Bob", came from a family associated with sailings to the Gare Loch. In 1854 he became master of the Gareloch steamboat ''Duchess of Argyle'' bought by two of his uncles, and developed a good public reputation as captain of successive ships as their fleet took on sailings from Kilmun on the Holy Loch. Gourock railway station is a terminus of the Inverclyde Line, located at Gourock pierhead, Scotland. ''Scillonian'' (also referred to as ''Scillonian II'' or TSMV ''Scillonian'') was a passenger ferry built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company in 1955 by John I. Thornycroft & Company of Woolston, Southampton. She was designed to carry 500 passengers and cargo between Penzance, Cornwall, to the offshore Isles of Scilly. Barry Railway Company
The Barry Railway Company was a railway and docks company in South Wales, first incorporated as the ''Barry Dock and Railway Company'' in 1884. It arose out of frustration among Rhondda coal owners at congestion and high charges at Cardiff Docks as well the monopoly held by the Taff Vale Railway in transporting coal from the Rhondda. In addition, the Taff Vale did not have the required capacity for the mineral traffic using the route, leading to lengthy delays in getting to Cardiff. The Barry Railway opened its main line from Trehafod in the Rhondda to Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Barry in 1889 and its first dock was opened in the same year, with modern loading equipment. HMS Snaefell
HMS ''Snaefell'' was a paddle steamer, built at John Brown & Company's Clydebank shipyard for the Barry Railway Company and launched in 1907 as the PS ''Barry''. Built to serve as a pleasure steamer carrying passengers on the Bristol Channel, she was quickly transferred to the ownership of Bristol Channel Passenger Boats which in 1911 became part of P & A Campbell. She was requisitioned by the Royal Navy during World War I and renamed HMS ''Barryfield'' serving during the Gallipoli Campaign where she was the last British ship to leave Suvla Bay evacuating British soldiers.
