National Collegiate Athletic Association
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates College athletics in the United States, student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, and Simon Fraser University, 1 in Canada. It also organizes the Athletics (physical culture), athletic programs of colleges and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in college sports. The headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Until the 1956–57 academic year, the NCAA was a single division for all schools. That year, the NCAA split into the NCAA University Division, University Division and the NCAA College Division, College Division. Allen Steckle
Allen Chubb Steckle (July 1872 – March 4, 1938) was an American football player and coach. He played tackle for the University of Michigan from 1897 to 1899 and was selected as an All-American in 1898. Steckle served as the head football coach at the Nevada State University—now known as the University of Nevada, Reno—from 1901 to 1903 and Oregon State University, known then as Oregon Agricultural College, from 1904 to 1905, compiling a career head coaching record of 16–14–2. In 1903, his Nevada State Sagebrushers team, drawn from a school with 80 students, defeated the California Golden Bears. Early years Steckle was born in July 1872 at Freeman, Michigan. His father, Abraham B. Steckle, was born in Waterloo Township, Ontario, Canada, in 1842, and worked as a farmer. His mother, Sarah (Furtney) Steckle, was also a native of Waterloo Township. 1902 Oregon Agricultural Aggies Football Team
The 1902 Oregon Agricultural Aggies football team represented Oregon Agricultural College (OAC)—now known as Oregon State University—as an independent during the 1902 college football season. In their first and only season under head coach Fred Herbold, the Aggies compiled a record of 4–1–1 record. Demonstrating strong defensive capabilities, the Aggies administered five shutouts in their six games, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 157 to 16. Background By the spring of 1902 it was clear that intercollegiate football had fully returned to OAC, with team manager James Zurcher purchasing 15 leather-reinforced jerseys for use in the fall campaign. Fred Herbold
Fred David Herbold (September 25, 1875 – May 9, 1914) was an American college football coach at the University of Idaho and Oregon Agricultural College, (now Oregon State University). From Eugene, Oregon, Herbold graduated with a pharmacy degree from Purdue University in Indiana in 1899. He then worked in Montana at Butte, as a chemist for a mining company, and also coached football at Butte High School that fall. Collegiate coaching Herbold's first head collegiate coaching position was at the University of Idaho in Moscow in 1900. He coached the Vandals for two seasons and compiled a 5–2–2 record. In April 1902, Herbold signed a contract making him the head coach for Oregon Agricultural College in Corvallis for the forthcoming season. The 1901 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with NCAA-designated "major selectors" retroactively selecting 1901 Michigan Wolverines football team, Michigan and 1901 Harvard Crimson football team, Harvard as NCAA Division I FBS national football championship, national champions. The NCAA records book also erroneously lists 1901 Yale Bulldogs football team, Yale as Parke H. Davis's selection. Harvard beat Yale 22–0 the last game of the year.
