The Ovens River, a perennial river of the north-east Murray catchment, part of the Murray-Darling basin, is located in the alpine and Hume regions of the Australian state of Victoria. Location and features Formed by the confluence of the East and West Branches of the river, the Ovens River rises in the Victorian Alps, at the settlement of Harrietville, sourced by runoff from high slopes located within the Alpine National Park and the Mount Buffalo National Park. Ovens (or The Ovens) was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria from 1856 to 1927. It was based in northern Victoria, bordered by the Ovens River in the south-west and included the town of Beechworth, Victoria. The district of Ovens was one of the initial districts of the first Victorian Legislative Assembly, 1856. Ovens (), formerly also Athnowen, is a small village adjacent to the town of Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland. Ovens Auditorium is an auditorium located adjacent to Bojangles' Coliseum, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Commander Jeremy John Ovens QCVS (born 1959) is a former Royal Navy officer and executive officer. Early life and education Ovens was born in 1959 in England, the youngest of three children of Patrick John Ovens, a distinguished Royal Navy major-general, and Margaret Mary White. Ovens studied at the University of Bristol, where he gained a degree in aeronautical engineering. Career Ovens joined the Royal Navy in 1978. He served in the Pacific, Atlantic, Caribbean, and Baltic in several of Her Majesty's Ships, including HMS ''Euryalus'', HMS ''London'', HMS ''Wolverton'', and HMS ''Yarmouth''.
