Uvda () is the name of a region in the southern Negev desert, directly north of Eilat. The name derives from the Hebrew word ''uvda'' (meaning fact). The region was captured during Operation Uvda in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War when the Israel Defense Forces entered the area with the stated aim of establishing 'facts on the ground', hence the name. The Uvda Valley is known for the 7000-year-old Leopard Temple archaeological site. Operation Uvda
Operation Uvda (, ''Mivtza Uvda'') was an operation conducted by the Israel Defense Forces during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, from 5 March to 10 March 1949. It was the last campaign undertaken by the IDF during the war and its objective was to capture the southern Negev desert, which was claimed by the Jordan, Kingdom of Jordan to be under Jordanian control in the 1949 Armistice Agreements, armistice talks of 1949. The southern Negev was designated to be part of the Jewish State in the 1947 UN Partition Plan. The name ''uvda'' (עובדה) is Hebrew language, Hebrew for "fact", referring to the operation's objective to establish Facts on the ground, de facto Israeli sovereignty over the territory in question, rather than actually conquer it. Ovda Airport
Ovda Airport was the former civilian part of the ''Ovda Israeli Air Force Base'' in the Uvda region of southern Israel, about north of Eilat. It was the country's second international airport. Ovda was originally built and opened as a military airbase in 1981 and was joint-used as a civilian airport a year later but ceased handling civilian flights on 31 March 2019 thanks to the opening of Ramon Airport, which is located much closer to the city of Eilat than Ovda. History Ovda Airbase was constructed for the Israeli Air Force (IAF) by the United States as a replacement for Etzion Air Force Base and opened in 1981. The Israeli Airports Authority began operations from Ovda Airport in 1982, after the signing of the peace treaty with Egypt. Previously all charter flights from Europe had landed at Etzion, however this was one of four airports in the Sinai that were handed over to Egypt as part of the Camp David Accords.
