''Out of the Air'' is an album by the Irish uilleann pipes player Davy Spillane, that was originally released on Tara Music in 1988. AllMusic awards this album with 4 stars. Following the release of his 'Atlantic Bridge' album, Uilleann Piper Davy put together a touring band including, Anto Drennan on Guitar, James Delaney on keyboards, Tony Molloy on bass, Paul Moran on drums. While on a UK tour the band recorded a session for BBC Radio One. Even though the session was recorded in the BBC studios with no audience it has since its release been regarded as a live recording. Davy Spillane
Davy Spillane (born 1959 in Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish musician, songwriter and a player of uilleann pipes and low whistle. Biography Irish music At the age of 12, Spillane started playing the uilleann pipes. His father encouraged him and inspired him with his love of all music genres. For the next three years he played at sessions and met many prominent Irish musicians. At the age of 16, he played in Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe. In 1978, he began to write his own music. He starred as a gypsy in Joe Comerford's 1981 film '' Traveller''. Moving Hearts and solo albums He is a founding member of Moving Hearts, along with Christy Moore and Donal Lunny in 1981. Although each member had a strong pedigree of Irish folk music, the band played mostly original compositions, sometimes with a political edge and a folk-rock sound. Tara Music (formerly known as Tara Records) has been regarded for many years as one of the leading traditional Irish music recording companies. The label was set up by Jack Fitzgerald and John Cook in the early 1970s. Their first release was the album ''Prosperous'' by a young Christy Moore, still largely unknown at the time. There was quite a gap between that album coming out and anything further being released. Bill Whelan
William Michael Joseph Whelan (born 22 May 1950) is an Irish composer and musician. He is best known for composing a piece for the interval of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. The result, "Riverdance", was a seven-minute piece of original music accompanying a new take on traditional Irish stepdance that became a full-length stage production and spawned a worldwide craze for Irish traditional music and dance. The corresponding soundtrack album earned him a Grammy. "Riverdance" was released as a single in 1994, credited to "Bill Whelan and Anúna featuring the RTÉ Concert Orchestra". It reached number one in Ireland for 18 weeks and number nine in the UK. The album of the same title reached number 31 in the album charts in 1995. Whelan has also arranged a symphonic suite version of ''Riverdance'', with its premiere performed by the Ulster Orchestra on BBC Radio 3 in August 2014. Atlantic Bridge (album)
''Atlantic Bridge'' was the Irish uilleann pipes player Davy Spillane's first solo album after the break-up of Moving Hearts. Together with producer P.J. Curtis he assembled a stellar cast of musicians from both sides of the Atlantic including, Albert Lee, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Christy Moore and many more to produce a fine blend of traditional and contemporary music. Curtis observed the album's fusion of Irish traditional, contemporary, bluegrass and country rock, merging "happily to find new dimensions in music which resulted form those meetings." Uilleann Pipes
The uilleann pipes ( or , ), also known as Union pipes and sometimes called Irish pipes, are the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. Their current name is a partial translation of the Irish language terms (literally, "pipes of the elbow"), from their method of inflation. There is no historical record of the name or use of the term ''uilleann pipes'' before the 20th century. It was an invention of W. H. Grattan Flood, Grattan Flood and the name stuck. People mistook the term 'union' to refer to the Acts of Union 1800, 1800 Act of Union; however, this is incorrect as Breandán Breathnach points out that a poem published in 1796 uses the term 'union'. William Rory Gallagher ( ; 2 March 1948 – 14 June 1995) was an Irish musician, singer, and songwriter. Regarded as "Ireland's first rock star", he is known for his virtuosic style of guitar playing and live performances. Dónal Lunny
Dónal Lunny (born 10 March 1947) is an Irish folk musician and producer. He plays guitar and bouzouki, as well as keyboards and bodhrán. As a founding member of popular bands Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, Coolfin, Mozaik, LAPD, and Usher's Island, he has been at the forefront of the renaissance of Irish traditional music for over five decades. In 2025 he was the recipient of the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. Lunny is the brother of musician and producer Manus Lunny. Anthony Drennan
Anthony "Anto" Drennan (born on 1 November 1958) is an Irish guitarist and bassist noted for his involvement with the Corrs, Genesis and Mike + the Mechanics. Drennan is from a musical Irish family and was born in Luton, England; he and his family moved back to Ireland while he was at a young age. He grew up in County Dublin and attended Kilmacud National School. Drennan became a touring lead guitarist for the Corrs from late 1995 and onwards.
