Orlanda Amarílis Lopes Rodrigues Fernandes Ferreira, known as Orlanda Amarílis (8 October 1924 – 1 February 2014) was a Cape Verdean writer. She is considered to be a noteworthy writer of fiction whose main literary themes include perspectives on women’s writing, with depictions of various aspects of the lives of Cape Verdean women as well as depictions of the Cape Verdean diaspora. She has been described as "indisputably one of Cape Verde’s most talented writers". Biography Orlanda Amarílis was born in Assomada, Santa Catarina, Cape Verde, on 8 October 1924. Amarílis is the daughter of Armando Napoleão Rodrigues Fernandes and Alice Lopes da Silva Fernandes. In 1945, she married Portuguese-Cape Verdean writer (born in Portugal) Manuel Ferreira, and the couple had two sons, Sérgio Manuel Napoleão Ferreira (born in Cape Verde) e Hernâni Donaldo Napoleão Ferreira (born in Goa). Orlanda Velez Isidro (born 6 March 1972) is a Portuguese classically trained coloratura soprano. Her preferred genre of music is Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. Since completing her education in Portugal and the Netherlands, she has lived and performed in the Netherlands. Career Orlanda Velez Isidro was born on 6 March 1972 in Évora, Portugal, and began her musical studies at age seven studying piano and violin. She started vocal training at the with Maria Repas Gonçalves. Between 1992 and 1997, Velez sang in the Gulbenkian Choir of Lisbon. She graduated with a degree in musicology in 1997, and moved to the Netherlands. ''Orlanda'' is a novel by Jacqueline Harpman published September 4, 1996, in Belgium by Grasset. The same year it tied for the prize, prix Médicis, with ''The Organisation'' by Jean Rolin. In 1996 it was translated into English by Ros Schwartz and published by Seven Stories Press. Synopsis Aline is a thirty-five year old literature professor. One day when she was reading while waiting for her train, the masculine part of her soul, which she calls Orlanda has decided to leave her body. Her suppressed spirit chose a handsome young man called Lucien Lefrène, who was seated across from her, to inhabit. Jacqueline Harpman (5 July 1929 – 24 May 2012) was a Belgian Francophone writer and psychoanalyst. Biography Jacqueline Harpman was born on 5 July 1929, in Etterbeek, Belgium, to Jeanne Honorez and Andries Harpman. The couple exported Belgian fabrics and lace to North African colonies and only settled in an apartment after Jacqueline's birth. She was the second daughter born to the couple. Her sister Andrée was nine years her senior. Her father was a Dutch-born Jew, so Harpman's family fled to Casablanca, Morocco when the Nazis invaded during World War II. Jacqueline was forbidden from attending the French High School due to her Jewish origins, so she continued her secondary studies at the Mets Sultan College in Casablanca.
