The August 1 Medal (), also known as the Order of Bayi, is a military decoration of People's Republic of China awarded by the Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and is the highest military award given to military personnel and civilians of the People's Liberation Army, People's Armed Police and personnel of Ministry of Public Security. History The August 1 Medal was originally established in 1955 as the highest military award for members of the PLA who served during the Chinese Civil War. On June 12, 2017, with the approval of Xi Jinping, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, the Order of August the First was re-established. Nie Haisheng
Nie Haisheng (born 13 October 1964) is a major general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force (PLASSF) in active service as an taikonaut and the third commander (unit chief) of the PLA Astronaut Corps (PLAAC). He was a PLA Air Force fighter pilot and director of navigation. Nie flew on Shenzhou 6 and served as commander on both the Shenzhou 10 and Shenzhou 12 missions, the latter of which became the first crew to visit the Tiangong space station. Qian Qihu (; born October 1937) is a Chinese military engineer. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and winner of the Highest Science and Technology Award. Biography Qian was born in October 1937 in Kunshan, Jiangsu, after the Imperial Japanese Army occupied Shanghai. He enlisted in the People's Liberation Army in 1954 and joined the Communist Party of China in 1956. After graduating from the PLA Military Institute of Engineering (now National University of Defense Technology) in 1960, he was sent abroad to study at the Gubischev Military Engineering Institute at the expense of the Chinese government. Cheng Kaijia (; 3 August 1918 – 17 November 2018), also known as Kai Chia Cheng, was a Chinese nuclear engineer and nuclear physicist. He was a pioneer and key figure in Chinese nuclear weapon development. He is known as one of the founding fathers of Two Bombs, One Satellite. Life Cheng was born in Wujiang, Jiangsu in 1918. He graduated from the Department of Physics of Zhejiang University in 1941. In 1946, he went to the United Kingdom to study at the University of Edinburgh, obtaining a PhD in 1948 under advisor Max Born. He then became a researcher in the UK. Cheng returned to the People's Republic of China in 1950. Jing Haipeng (; born 24 October 1966) is a major general of the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) in active service as a vice-commander of the 82nd Group Army. A fighter pilot in the PLA Air Force (PLAAF), he was selected to be a PLA Astronaut Corps (PLAAC) astronaut in 1998.
