Ophiomyia Simplex
The asparagus miner (''Ophiomyia simplex'' Loew; Diptera; Agromyzidae) is a Generalist and specialist species, specialist insect that lives on asparagus plants (''Asparagus officinalis'' L.) and is a problem for asparagus growers. It is shiny black and occurs in most major asparagus-producing regions of the world. Identification The asparagus miner is a bivoltine stem-mining fly and a major pest of asparagus. It is small (~2–5 mm) with a shiny black body and black legs Under a dissecting microscope or with a hand lens, one can confirm the identity of the fly by checking that the costa (the thicker marginal vein) ends at vein R4+5. In addition, the fly has five conspicuous orbital bristles emerging from the middle of its head. The maggots (immature stages) may be up to 5 mm long, and can be found feeding internally in asparagus stems. They are creamy white in appearance, with the anterior spiracles on short stalks. The pupae are darker brown or reddish, and can somet ...

Erich Martin Hering
Erich Martin Hering (10 November 1893, Zielona Góra, Heinersdorf – 18 August 1967, Berlin) was a German entomologist. Hering specialised in leaf miners. He was a curator in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, where his collections of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera are conserved. His collections of Agromyzidae are shared between Museum für Naturkunde and the Agricultural School at Portici, now part of the University of Naples Federico II. Hering issued the exsiccata ''Minenherbarium''. He discovered a species of fly, ''Acanthonevra scutellopunctata'' in 1952.Bisby F.A., Roskov Y.R., Orrell T.M., Nicolson D., Paglinawan L.E., Bailly N., Kirk P.M., Bourgoin T., Baillargeon G., Ouvrard D. John Russell Malloch
John Russell Malloch (16 November 1875 – 1963) was a Scotland, Scottish Entomology, entomologist who specialised in Fly, Diptera and Hymenoptera. Malloch was born at Milton of Campsie in Stirlingshire, Scotland. His widowed father had one son, James Malloch (born 1873) when he married John Russell's mother, Margaret Stirling, on 30 August 1875. He and several others of his family worked at a textile factory in the area, but he spent his spare time collecting insects in the fields. His first published paper (1897) describes a type of migrating butterfly. In 1903 Malloch sold his extensive collection to the Glasgow Museum. He continued to collect, but began to concentrate on Diptera from that time forward. Before emigrating in 1910, he donated the remainder of his collection (13,000 flies) to the Royal Scottish Museum. Little is known about Malloch's education. He listed a university degree from Glasgow on his job applications in the USA, but this has not been verified by univer ...
