Operation Breakthrough
Operation Breakthrough was a US-Soviet effort to free three gray whales from pack ice in the Beaufort Sea near Point Barrow in the U.S. state of Alaska in 1988. The whales' plight generated media attention that led to the collaboration of multiple governments and organizations to free them. The youngest whale died during the effort and it is unknown if the remaining two whales ultimately survived. Rescue effort On , 1988, Inupiaq hunter Roy Ahmaogak discovered three gray whales trapped in pack ice in the Beaufort Sea near Point Barrow in the U.S. state of Alaska. The hunter used a chainsaw to attempt cutting a path in the ice leading to open water. Fellow villagers helped the hunter by using water pumps to keep ice from reforming overnight. Word spread through the Inupiat community about the whales, and biologists from North Slope Borough, Alaska, visited the site and realized the danger. A Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane heavylift helicopter was tasked to create holes in the ice using ...

Operation Breakthrough (anti-poverty Movement)
Operation Breakthrough is an anti-poverty movement founded by Terry Sandford in August 1964, established in Durham, North Carolina. It played a prominent and influential role in the expansion of the Civil Rights Movement in Durham. In the 1960s, one quarter of the adults in North Carolina that were older than 25 years had received at most a sixth-grade level education. This would suggest that many were illiterate.2 The concept, developed through the North Carolina Fund, was mimicked throughout the nation. Throughout this movement, activism played a fundamental role. The main aim of the program consisted of changing the economic situation of a state through the use of political and social power. History Economic situation of Durham in the 1960s In the mid-20th century, Durham's economic situation was not as idyllic as people might have thought. Indeed, Durham was an unequal town where huge disparities among the citizens existed. Equality and civil rights had been prom ...

Operation Breakthrough (housing Program)
Operation Breakthrough was a program of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, authorized by the Housing Law of 1968., a 3-phase HUD demonstration that tested innovative building materials and methods. George Romney announced Operation Breakthrough in May 1969, four months after joining President Richard Nixon’s cabinet as secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It was intended to increase the amount of housing available to the poor and it initially had Nixon's support. Based on his automotive industry experience, Romney thought that the cost of housing could be significantly reduced if in-factory modular construction techniques were used, despite the lack of national building standards. HUD officials believed that the introduction of this technique could help bring about desegregation; Romney said, "We've got to put an end to the idea of moving to suburban areas and living only among people of the same economic and social class". This aspect of the progra ...

Breakthrough (military)
A breakthrough occurs when an offensive force has broken or penetrated an opponent's defensive line, and rapidly exploits the gap. Usually, large force is employed on a relatively small portion of the front to achieve this. While the line may have held for a long while prior to the breakthrough, the breakthrough happens suddenly when the pressure on the defender causes him to "snap". As the first defensive unit breaks, the adjacent units suffer adverse results from this (spreading panic, additional defensive angles, threat to supply lines). Since they were already pressured, this leads them to "snap" as well, causing a domino-like collapse of the defensive system. The defensive force thus evaporates at the breakthrough point, letting the attacker to rapidly move troops into the gap, exploiting the breakthrough in width (by attacking enemy units at the edge of the breakthrough, so widening it), in depth (advancing into enemy territory towards strategic objectives), or a combin ...
