Opening Of The Riksdag
The Opening of the Riksdag Session () is an annual ceremony in the Kingdom of Sweden to mark the start of a new parliamentary year for the Swedish Riksdag. The current ceremony was first held in 1975, replacing an older ceremony known as the Solemn Opening of the Riksdag (Swedish: Riksdagens högtidliga öppnande) that had been held since the 17th century. It is held every year in September. During the ceremony the Monarchy of Sweden, monarch declares the new session open and the Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister makes a speech outlining the government’s priorities for the upcoming year. Church service Before the ceremony starts, the members of the Riksdag attend a roll call and walk to Storkyrkan where a special church service is held. This church service is also attended by the Swedish royal family, royal family seated in a special box close to the altar. Carl XVI Gustaf
Carl XVI Gustaf (Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus; born 30 April 1946) is King of Sweden. Having reigned since 1973, he is the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history. Carl Gustaf was born during the reign of his paternal great-grandfather, King Gustaf V, as the youngest child and only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His father died 1947 KLM Douglas DC-3 crash, in an airplane crash in Denmark in January 1947, when Carl Gustaf was nine months old. Carl Gustaf became crown prince and heir apparent to the Swedish throne at the age of four when his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf acceded to the throne in 1950. Silver Throne
The Silver Throne ( or ) is a throne which has been used by the Swedish monarch at coronations, accessions to the throne and the State Opening of Parliament. The Silver Throne is located in the Hall of State at Stockholm Palace. The Silver Throne was made for Queen Christina's coronation in 1650. Crafted by Abraham Drentwett in Augsburg, Bavaria, it was a gift from Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. Since coronations stopped being practiced the throne has been used for state openings of parliament (until 1975) and enthronement ceremonies (last for Carl XVI Gustaf in 1973). It was last used in 1974 for the State Opening of Parliament. The throne took a prominent role in 2023 for a formal portrait of King Carl XVI Gustaf to mark his Golden Jubilee. The Royal Chapel () is a church inside Stockholm Palace. It was opened in 1754. The royal palace chapels (including the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace, the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace, and Riddarholmen Church) are all part of the national Church of Sweden, although their management is in the hands of the Marshal of the Realm (Sweden), Office of the Marshal of the Realm, as part of the Royal Estate. House of Culture (Swedish: Kulturhuset) is a cultural center situated to the south of Sergels torg in central Stockholm, Sweden. The House of Culture has been described as a symbol for Stockholm as well as of the growth of modernism in Sweden. Overview In 1965 the city's government announced an architectural competition won by modernist architect Peter Celsing (1920–1974). Kulturhuset is from most angles dominated by its concrete and glass façade structure, with the adjacent theatre building having a façade of stainless steel. The original intention had been for the museum of modern art Moderna Museet, to occupy large parts of the building, but the museum dropped out of the project in 1969. Du Gamla, Du Fria
(), is the ''de facto'' national anthem of Sweden. Originally titled (), its lyrics were written in 1844 by Swedish antiquarian Richard Dybeck, who set them to a variation of the old Swedish folk music, folk melody ''Kärestans död'' ()''.'' The song has been widely recognised as the national anthem since the late 19th century, gaining prominence after Oscar II, King Oscar II, attending a dinner in 1893, stood in acknowledgement upon hearing the song. It gained further recognition in 1938, when Sveriges Radio, the national public broadcaster, began playing it at the conclusion of its daily programming. Kungssången
''Kungssången'' (''The King's Song'') is the Swedish royal anthem. It is also known by its first line, ''Ur svenska hjärtans djup en gång'' ('). Although sung on such occasions as the King's birthday, the annual opening of the Riksdag and the Nobel Prize ceremony, the song is not considered the Swedish national anthem. ''Du gamla, Du fria'' is the ''de facto'' national anthem of Sweden, but has never been officially recognised. The lyrics were written by Carl Vilhelm August Strandberg and the music composed for four part male chorus by Otto Lindblad. ''Kungssången'' replaced the previous royal anthem, '' Bevare Gud vår kung'', which was sung to the melody of the British royal anthem, ''God Save the King''. The speaker of the Riksdag () is the speaker (politics), presiding officer of the national unicameral legislature in Sweden. The Riksdag underwent profound changes in 1867, when the medieval Riksdag of the Estates was abolished. The new form of the Riksdag included bicameral system, two elected chambers, each with its own speaker. Since the ''de facto'' introduction of parliamentarism in 1917, the Riksdag has properly functioned as the institution to which the prime minister and the Government of Sweden, government are held accountable. Silvia (born Silvia Renate Sommerlath; 23 December 1943) is Queen of Sweden as the wife of King Carl XVI Gustaf. She has held this title since her marriage to Carl XVI Gustaf in 1976. The king and queen have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine. Life Guards (Sweden)
The Life Guards (, designation LG) is a combined Swedish Army cavalry/infantry regiment. Its responsibilities include the defence of Stockholm as well as provision of the royal guard of honour for the King of Sweden and the Stockholm Palace.
