OpenCorporates
OpenCorporates is a website that shares data on corporations under the copyleft Open Database Licence, Open Database License. The company, OpenCorporates Ltd, was incorporated on 18 December 2010 by Chris Taggart and Rob McKinnon, and the website was officially launched on 20th. Data is sourced from national business registries in 140 jurisdictions, and presented in a standardised form. Collected data comprises the name of the entity, date of incorporation, registered addresses, and the names of directors. Some data, such as the ownership structure, is contributed by users. Recognition In 2011, the site won third place in the Open Data Challenge. Vice President of the European Commission Neelie Kroes said the site "is the kind of resource the (Digital) Single Market needs and it is encouraging to see that it is being built." Open Database Licence
The Open Database License (ODbL) is a copyleft license agreement intended to allow users to freely share, modify, and use a database while maintaining this same freedom for others. ODbL is published by Open Data Commons, which is part of Open Knowledge Foundation. The ODbL was created with the goal of allowing users to share their data freely without worrying about problems relating to copyright or ownership. It allows users to freely use the data in the database, including in other databases; edit existing data in the database; and add new data to the database. European Business Register
The European Business Register Network (EBR Network) is a network of trade registers kept by the registration authorities of several European countries, managed by the European Business Registry Association. The EBR was developed as a part of the fully integrated approach of the European Commission in the legislation designed to achieve regulations to promote transparent financial markets and to facilitate free movement of companies. The EBR has served as a starting point of the Business Register Interoperability Throughout Europe (BRITE) project which developed an interoperability solution BRIS for Business Registers to interact across the European Union. BRIS makes it possible to obtain comparable, official company information from the countries connected to the network. Corporate Registers Forum
The Corporate Registers Forum is an association grouping the corporate registries among the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. The membership is open to government agencies and their officials responsible for the administration of body corporate registers (a register of companies for example).
