''On with the Dance'' is 1920 American silent costume drama directed by George Fitzmaurice, starring Mae Murray and David Powell, and released by Paramount Pictures. The film is a screen adaptation of the 1917 Michael Morton play by the same name. Filming began in August 1919 when Mae Murray rejoined Famous Players-Lasky Corporation after having completed a term with Universal Pictures. Actor Robert Schable had appeared in the 1917 Broadway play. George Fitzmaurice
George Fitzmaurice (13 February 1885 – 13 June 1940) was a French-born film director and producer. Career Fitzmaurice's career first started as a set designer on stage. Beginning in 1914, and continuing until his death in 1940, he directed a total of over 80 films; several of these were successful, including '' The Son of the Sheik'', '' Raffles'', ''Mata Hari'', and '' Suzy''. At the beginning of his directorial career, Fitzmaurice was astute at directing stage actresses in their initial films with the first wave of great Broadway stars that migrated to motion pictures during the World War I era, including Mae Murray, Elsie Ferguson, Fannie Ward, Helene Chadwick, Irene Fenwick, Gail Kane, and Edna Goodrich. Famous Players-Lasky Corporation was an American motion picture and distribution company formed on June 28, 1916, from the merger of Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company—originally formed by Zukor as Famous Players in Famous Plays—and the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company. The deal, guided by president Zukor, eventually resulted in the incorporation of eight film production companies, making the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation one of the biggest players of the silent film era. The film was a promotional film for exhibitors and never had a regular theatrical release. The film includes a brief history of Paramount, interviews with various actors, and clips from upcoming projects (some of which never came to fruition). Ida Waterman (born Ida Shaw; March 10, 1852 – May 22, 1941) was a stage and screen actress. Waterman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She appeared some thirty or more Broadway productions between the late 1880s and early 1920s. She played Elise Claremont in the 1889 farce-comedy ''Our Flat'' and the following year Mrs. Kirke in '' Men and Women'' opposite Maude Adams. In 1899 she was Mrs. Crawley in ''Becky Sharp'' (later made into 1934 film ''Becky Sharp)'' and in 1922 closed out her Broadway career playing Mrs. French in ''Lawful Larceny''. Waterman was popular in numerous silent films in the teens and twenties as a supporting elderly actress much like Kate Lester. Robert Schable (August 31, 1873 – July 7, 1947) was an American stage and screen actor as well as a stage manager from Hamilton, Ohio. Biography A longtime stage player from the Charles Frohman company since the 1890s, Schable began in silent films in 1919. In films he often played comedic, character parts or men with a European flair. He died, from Ptomaine poisoning, in Hollywood in 1947. Alternately ''IMDb'' has his death as a suicide. Two films Schable appeared in have been restored, ''Sherlock Holmes'' (1922) and ''The Man and the Moment'' (1929).
