Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (; August 29, 1809 – October 7, 1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with '' The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table'' (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer, and inventor. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Holmes was educated at Phillips Academy and Harvard College. After graduating from Harvard in 1829, he briefly studied law before turning to the medical profession. He began writing poetry at an early age; one of his most famous works, " Old Ironsides", was published in 1830 and was influential in the eventual preservation of the USS ''Constitution''. Oliver Wendell Holmes (February 2, 1902 – November 25, 1981) was an American archivist and historian, who served as executive director of the National Historical Publications Commission from 1961 to 1971. Wendell Holmes (August 17, 1914 – April 27, 1962) was an American actor whose career included work in radio, television, Broadway, and film. Early years Holmes was born Oliver Wendell Holmes in Cheshire, Ohio to Ferdie and Ada Holmes. Census records indicate that by 1930 the family was living in Columbus, Ohio. Career An article appearing in The Des Moines Register (1941) mentions Holmes being born on a farm and describes his winning a Chautauqua competition at age six, entering high school at age ten, and graduating from Ohio State University at age 18 with a degree in Education. It further states that instead of becoming an educator, Holmes hitch-hiked to New York and began working as an actor, starting his radio career in 1934. It is the parent school for the magnet school Northside School of Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship. During 20222023, Holmes High School had an enrollment of 2,561 students and a student to teacher ratio of 15.79. The school received an overall rating of "C" from the Texas Education Agency for the 20212022 school year. Campus Holmes High School was established in 1964 and is known for its circular architecture, in which several buildings are completely cylindrical. The Oliver Wendell Holmes House is a historic house at 868 Hale Street in the Beverly Farms section of Beverly, Massachusetts. Built c. 1880, this modest Victorian wood-frame house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1972, as the only surviving structure associated with the life of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841–1935), whose summer home it was from 1909 until his death. Description and history The Holmes House is a 2-1/2 wood-frame structure, with a steeply-pitched gable roof, and three brick chimneys. Its exterior is sheathed in wooden clapboards, with shingles in the front-facing gable end and on the sides of a shed-roof dormer.
