Ogmore Centre
Ogmore Centre at Ogmore-by-Sea, Wales, often referred to as the Ogmore School Camp, was situated on an site on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. It was built for the benefit of children from all over South Wales shortly before World War II as a residential education, sport, arts and outdoor activities centre for young people 8–24 years of age. The camp was closed in 2007 and demolished to make way for housing in 2014. History Ogmore Centre came under the ownership of Bridgend City Council at the time of local authority reorganisation. It had previously been operated under the old Mid Glamorgan Education Authority. Although still under the ownership of Bridgend County Borough Council it was located in The Vale of Glamorgan with regard to planning etc. After it was closed by Bridgend County Borough Council in the mid 1990s public pressure led to it being reopened in 1998 as a Trust under the leadership of Roger Lewis, now Chief Executive of the Welsh Rugby Union. Ogmore-by-Sea
Ogmore-by-Sea (Welsh: ''Aberogwr'', meaning "Mouth of the River Ogmore") is a seaside village in St Brides Major community in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It lies on the western limit of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast of south Wales. The population in 2011 was 878. History A polished flint axe-head of Seamer type was found at Ogmore Mill in 1976. Just like its counterparts in Cornwall, Ireland and Brittany, the west-facing beach and coast was notorious as a graveyard for ships during strong on-shore winds (south-westerly winds from the Atlantic). Many ships, in particular, were destroyed on Tusker Rock, a brutal reef slightly out to sea that is totally covered at high tide. South Wales
South Wales ( cy, De Cymru) is a loosely defined region of Wales bordered by England to the east and mid Wales to the north. Generally considered to include the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, south Wales extends westwards to include Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. In the western extent, from Swansea westwards, local people would probably recognise that they lived in both south Wales and west Wales. Bridgend City Council
Bridgend (; cy, Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr or just , meaning "the end of the bridge on the Ogmore") is a town in Bridgend County Borough in Wales, west of Cardiff and east of Swansea. The town is named after the medieval bridge over the River Ogmore. The River Ewenny also flows through the town. The population was 49,597 in 2021. Historically a part of Glamorgan, Bridgend has greatly expanded in size since the early 1980s – the 2001 census recorded a population of 39,429 for the town and the 2011 census reported that the Bridgend Local Authority had a population of 139,200 – up from 128,700 in 2001. Bridgend County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is the governing body for Bridgend County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. History Bridgend County Borough and Bridgend County Borough Council came into effect from 1 April 1996, following the '' Local Government (Wales) Act 1994''. Bridgend County Borough Council largely replaced Ogwr Borough Council, though St Brides Major, Ewenny and Wick were transferred from Ogwr to the Vale of Glamorgan.
