Narrow Gauge
A narrow-gauge railway (narrow-gauge railroad in the US) is a railway with a track gauge (distance between the rails) narrower than . Most narrow-gauge railways are between and . Since narrow-gauge railways are usually built with Minimum railway curve radius, tighter curves, smaller structure gauges, and lighter Rail profile, rails; they can be less costly to build, equip, and operate than standard- or broad-gauge railways (particularly in mountainous or difficult terrain). Lower-cost narrow-gauge railways are often used in mountainous terrain, where engineering savings can be substantial. Lower-cost narrow-gauge railways are often built to serve industries as well as sparsely populated communities where the traffic potential would not justify the cost of a standard- or broad-gauge line. Narrow-gauge railways have specialised use in mines and other environments where a small structure gauge necessitates a small loading gauge. In some countries, narrow gauge is the standard: Ja ... Articulated Passenger Trains
An articulated vehicle is a vehicle which has a permanent or semi-permanent coupling in its construction. This coupling works as a large pivot joint, allowing it to bend and turn more sharply. There are many kinds, from heavy equipment to Articulated bus, buses, trams and Articulated car, trains. Articulated locomotive, Steam locomotives were sometimes articulated so the driving wheels could pivot around corners. In a broader sense, any vehicle towing a Trailer (vehicle), trailer (including a semi-trailer) could be described as articulated (which comes from the Latin word ''articulus'', "small joint"). In the UK, an ''articulated lorry'' is the combination of a Tractor unit, tractor and a trailer, abbreviated to "artic". In the US, it is called a semi-trailer truck, tractor-trailer or semi-truck and is not necessarily considered articulated. Types Buses Buses are articulated to allow for a much longer bus that can still navigate within the turning radius of a normal bus. Mo ... Electric Multiple Units Of Japan
Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of matter possessing an electric charge. Electricity is related to magnetism, both being part of the phenomenon of electromagnetism, as described by Maxwell's equations. Common phenomena are related to electricity, including lightning, static electricity, electric heating, electric discharges and many others. The presence of either a positive or negative electric charge produces an electric field. The motion of electric charges is an electric current and produces a magnetic field. In most applications, Coulomb's law determines the force acting on an electric charge. Electric potential is the work done to move an electric charge from one point to another within an electric field, typically measured in volts. Electricity plays a central role in many modern technologies, serving in electric power where electric current is used to energise equipment, and in electronics dealing with electrical ... Odakyu 50000 Series VSE
The or VSE (Vault Super Express) was an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by Odakyu Electric Railway on ''Romancecar'' services in Japan. Two 10-car articulated sets were introduced in March 2005, manufactured by Nippon Sharyo. The type won a Japanese Good Design Award in 2005, and a Blue Ribbon Award in 2006. On 11 March 2022, the train type was withdrawn from regular service, and reserved for use on special services only. The last trainset was retired on 10 December 2023. Design Designed by architect Noriaki Okabe, the 50000 series was developed in response to a decrease in limited express service usage to the Hakone region. Body construction consisted of double-skin aluminium. The 50000 series had regenerative brakes, and was equipped with air suspension and tilting for passenger comfort. As with most previous ''Romancecar'' trains, the train cars in the sets were articulated. Interior Passenger accommodation primarily consisted of 2+2 abreast seatin ... Odakyu 7000 Series LSE
The (Luxury Super Express) was an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated from December 1980 to July 2018 by Odakyu Electric Railway on "Romancecar" limited express services in Japan. Design The 7000 series LSE trains were the first new "Romancecars" introduced since the Odakyu 3100 series NSE 17 years previously. The overall styling represented an evolution of the 3100 series design, with 11 articulated cars mounted on shared bogies. The external livery of orange vermilion, grey, and white was also identical to that carried by the 3100 series. The passenger doors continued the folding style, but were automatically operated instead of the manually operated doors of the 3100 series. Odakyu 3100 Series NSE
The or NSE (New Super Express) was an articulated electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the Odakyu Electric Railway on ''Romancecar'' services in the Tokyo area of Japan between 1963 and 2000. It won the Blue Ribbon Award in 1964. Operations The 3100 series sets were used on ''Hakone'', ''Ashigara'', and ''Sagami'' services. History Introduced in 1957, the Odakyu 3000 series SE ''Romancecar'' and associated ''Hakone'' limited express service proved to be very popular, and there were capacity shortages on weekends even with all trainsets in use. In 1960, shortages were exacerbated by increased tourism to Hakone after the Hakone Ropeway was completed. Odakyu introduced semi-express trains to the Odawara Line in 1959 using and trainsets to meet demand, but there were calls within the company to increase the number of limited express trains. Ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, different plans to increase the capacity of Romancecars were considered, which included ... Articulated Bogie
A bogie ( ) (or truck in North American English) comprises two or more wheelsets (two wheels on an axle), in a frame, attached under a vehicle by a pivot. Bogies take various forms in various modes of transport. A bogie may remain normally attached (as on many railroad cars and semi-trailers) or be quickly detachable (as for a dolly in a road train or in railway bogie exchange). It may include suspension components within it (as most rail and trucking bogies do), or be solid and in turn be suspended (as are most bogies of tracked vehicles). It may be mounted on a swivel, as traditionally on a railway carriage or locomotive, additionally jointed and sprung (as in the landing gear of an airliner), or held in place by other means (centreless bogies). Although ''bogie'' is the preferred spelling and first-listed variant in various dictionaries, bogey and bogy are also used.
