October 2022 German Railway Attack
An attack on the German railway communication system led to a disruption of the complete railway traffic in Northern Germany on 8 October 2022. Event In the early morning of 8 October 2022, two fibre optic cables which are necessary for the GSM-R communication system of Deutsche Bahn were deliberately damaged. One crime scene was in the north-east of Berlin, the other away in Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia. The cut of the cables halted all rail traffic in northern Germany for around three hours. Services were affected between Berlin and regions in the west and north of the country including Schleswig-Holstein, the cities of Hamburg and Bremen, as well as Lower Saxony and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia. GSM-R
GSM-R, Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway or GSM-Railway is an international wireless communications standard for railway communication and applications. A sub-system of European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), it is used for communication between train and railway regulation control centers. The system is based on GSM and ''EIRENE – MORANE'' specifications which guarantee performance at speeds up to 500 km/h (310 mph), without any communication loss. GSM-R could be supplanted by LTE-R, with the first production implementation being in South Korea. However, LTE (telecommunication), LTE is generally considered to be a "4G" protocol, and the International Union of Railways, UIC's Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) program is considering moving to something "5G"-based (specifically 3GPP R15/16, i.e. 5G NR), thus skipping two technological generations. The Russo-Ukrainian War began in February 2014 and is ongoing. 2022 Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage
On 26 September 2022, a series of underwater explosions and consequent gas leaks occurred on 3 of 4 Nord Stream pipes, rendering them inoperable. The Nord Stream 1 (NS1) and Nord Stream 2 (NS2) are natural gas pipelines. They are two of 23 gas pipelines between Europe and Russia. The leaks were located in international waters, but within the economic zones of Denmark and Sweden. Both pipelines were built to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea, and are majority owned by the Russian majority state-owned gas company, Gazprom. Prior to the leaks, the pipelines were filled with natural gas but were not transporting it as a consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Volker Wissing
Volker Wissing (born 22 April 1970) is a German lawyer and former judge who served as the Minister for Transport in the federal government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz from 2021 to 2025 and as Minister of Justice from 2024 to 2025.
