Henry Nicholas Ridley
Henry Nicholas Ridley CMG (1911), MA (Oxon), FRS, FLS, F.R.H.S. (10 December 1855 – 24 October 1956) was an English botanist, geologist and naturalist who lived much of his life in Singapore. He was instrumental in promoting rubber trees in the Malay Peninsula that led to a level of rapid deforestation, instrumental in the 1926 Great Flood. For the fervour with which he pursued this work he came to be known as "Mad Ridley". Life Henry Ridley was the second son and third child born to Louisa Pole Stuart and Oliver Matthew Ridley in West Harling in Norfolk, where his father was the Rector. At the age of three his mother died and his father moved to Cobham in Kent. He studied at Tonbridge School and then went to Haileybury where his brother Stuart also studied. Jean-François Leroy (botanist)
Jean-François Leroy (; 24 September 1729 - 1791) was a French architect. For the Prince of Condé, he worked on the Château of Chantilly, the Palais Bourbon, and the Hôtel de Lassay, where he replaced in 1780. Biography Leroy was born in Chantilly, the son of Jean-Jacques Leroy, building inspector of the Prince of Condé, and Mary-Anne Dunu, daughter of the superintendent of the Château de Chantilly. He entered the service of the prince, following his father. In 1761, he married Toudouze Françoise-Thérèse, daughter of the prince's master of the hunt. He was appointed architect of the Château de Chantilly in 1768, upon the death of his predecessor, Brice Le Chauve. In Chantilly, he built the Château d'Enghien (1769–1770) and the Hameau de Chantilly (1774–1775). He worked with Claude Billard de Bélisard on the Palais Bourbon and the Hôtel de Lassay, and then succeeded him in about 1780. In 1782 he revised Bélisard's plan for the Place du Palais Bourbon. Charles Ludwig de Blume or Karl Ludwig von Blume (9 June 1796 – 3 February 1862) was a German-Dutch botanist and entomologist who spent most of his professional life in the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. As deputy director of agriculture at the Bogor Botanical Gardens in Java (1823–1826) and later director of the Rijksherbarium in Leiden, he conducted extensive studies of Southeast Asian flora, publishing numerous influential works including ''Bijdragen tot de flora van Nederlandsch Indië'' (1825–1827) and ''Rumphia'' (1835–1849). Together with Philipp Franz von Siebold, Blume co-founded the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Horticulture in the Netherlands in 1842, helping to revitalise the country's reputation as a centre for botanical study and exotic plant cultivation.
