Northern Hearts
Northern Hearts is an association football club based in Timaru, New Zealand. The club was founded in 1947 and from 1982 to 1990 was amalgamated with Timaru City as South Canterbury United. It reverted to Northern Hearts in 1991. Northern Hearts competed in the various Southern Premier leagues from 1971 to the mid-2000s. The club's best end-of-season position came in 2001, when they finished as runners-up in the premiership. Northern Hearts first competed for the Chatham Cup in 1947. Aorangi Park, Timaru
Aorangi Oval is a cricket ground in Timaru, South Canterbury, New Zealand, situated on Morgans Road in the suburb of Gleniti. It is a part of Aorangi Park, South Canterbury's major sporting complex, which includes facilities for several outdoor sports and the Southern Trust Events Centre for indoor sports. It is the headquarters for the South Canterbury Cricket Association and the South Canterbury cricket team, which competes in the Hawke Cup. The land for the park was acquired in 1953, but development did not begin until 1970. The park was named Aorangi Park in 1972. The stadium and netball courts were developed in 1974 and the first sports field in 1975. Development continued through the 1970s. List A cricket was first held at Aorangi Oval in the 1980/81 Shell Cup when Canterbury played Wellington. To date the ground has held a total of fifteen List A matches. Southern Premier League (New Zealand)
The Southern Premier League (known as the ODT Southern Men's Premier League for sponsorship reasons) is a New Zealand association football league competition administered by Southern Football involving clubs from the lower half of the South Island of New Zealand. Five of the clubs are from Dunedin, two from Invercargill and one each are from Mosgiel and Timaru. The league has also previously included an Otago youth development team. There is currently a U-15 Development League that runs alongside the competition. Until 2009, the league was known as the SoccerSouth Premier League. Since the inception of the competition, it has been dominated by Dunedin City Royals and the two predecessor teams which merged to form that club, Caversham AFC and Dunedin Technical. South Canterbury United
South Canterbury United was a football team from New Zealand. The team was initially formed in 1982 as a composite side containing players from Timaru City and Northern Hearts. Northern Hearts left the amalgamation in 1991, returning to their former name; Timaru City did the same in 1996. United continued as a separate side until 2008 before folding. Chatham Cup
The Chatham Cup is New Zealand's premier Single-elimination tournament, knockout tournament in men's association football. It is held annually, with the final contested in September. The current champions of the Chatham Cup are Wellington Olympic, who defeated Auckland City on penalties in the final. The 1947 Chatham Cup was the 20th annual nationwide knockout football competition in New Zealand. The competition was run on a regional basis, with regional associations each holding separate qualifying rounds. Teams taking part in the final rounds are known to have included North Shore United (Auckland), Waterside (Wellington) Wanganui Technical Old Boys (Whanganui), St. Andrews (Manawatu), Technical Old Boys (Christchurch), Northern Hearts (Timaru), Mosgiel (Dunedin), and Invercargill Thistle (Southland). 1980 Chatham Cup
The 1980 Chatham Cup was the 53rd annual nationwide knockout football competition in New Zealand. Early stages of the competition were run in three regions (northern, central, and southern), with the National League teams receiving a bye until the Fourth Round of the competition. In all, 93 teams took part in the competition. Note: Different sources give different numberings for the rounds of the competition: some start round one with the beginning of the regional qualifications; others start numbering from the first national knock-out stage.
