Northeast Of England
North East England, commonly referred to simply as the North East within England, is one of nine official regions of England. It consists of County Durham , Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and part of northern North Yorkshire. It is the least-populated region of England: home to 2.6 million residents in 2022. The largest settlements are Newcastle upon Tyne, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Gateshead, Darlington, Hartlepool and Durham. The North East is covered by two mayoral combined authorities, North East Combined Authority and Tees Valley Combined Authority. The regions of England, formerly known as the government office regions, are the highest tier of sub-national division in England. They were established in 1994 and follow the 1974–96 county borders. They are a continuation of the former 1940s Historical and alternative regions of England#Standard statistical regions, standard regions which followed the 1889–1974 administrative county borders. Tees Valley is a combined authority area in North East England, around the lower River Tees. The area is not a geographical valley.
